In this final test, discipline matters more than instinct. The dogs must stay in position and remain calm as a cat walks directly in front of them — a setup designed to test distraction and self-control. 🐈

The exercise puts focus, obedience, and composure on full display, highlighting the level of control required before a dog can qualify for service work.

We weren’t bored.

We were unsupervised.

That meant riding until the road ran out.

It meant dust in your mouth and legs burning from pedaling too far.

It meant no plan, no clock, and no one checking in every five minutes.

If you got thirsty, you found a hose.

If you got lost, you figured it out.

If something went wrong, you learned fast and remembered it forever.

Those long days didn’t need schedules.

They needed daylight.

Freedom wasn’t something we talked about.

It was just how life worked.

We learned responsibility by being trusted with it.

We learned confidence by being left alone with our decisions.

No helmets.

No playdates.

No constant supervision.

Just miles of gravel road, friends riding beside you, and the feeling that the world was bigger than your backyard.

That kind of childhood didn’t spoil us.

It shaped us.

It taught us how to think.

How to solve problems.

How to stand on our own.

And that’s something no screen will ever replace.
