One of the questions we get most often here at Smith Homestead is:

“Do you offer gluten-free products?”

The short answer is no, we do not.

As a home bakery, our kitchen contains ingredients that include gluten, nuts, shellfish, dairy, and other common allergens. Because of this, all of our products are made in a home kitchen that is not subject to state inspection, and we include that information on our labels so customers can make informed decisions.

When it comes to gluten-free baking, it’s something we simply are not comfortable offering. While I understand the fermentation process of sourdough, I am not educated enough on gluten-free baking and cross-contamination to feel confident serving those with gluten sensitivities or celiac disease.

One thing I can speak to is sourdough fermentation. During the long fermentation process, the wild yeast and beneficial bacteria help break down some of the gluten proteins and starches in the dough. Many people find sourdough easier to digest because it is essentially “pre-digested” before baking. However, sourdough is NOT gluten-free and is not considered safe for those with celiac disease.

If you’re looking for delicious gluten-free baked goods, I highly recommend checking out Sand County Staples at the Rome Farmers Market. They specialize in gluten-free baking and would be a much better option for those needing gluten-free products.

🎣 Petenwell Family Fishing Program 🎣

Sam with Guy4Eyes Guide Service and Kameo from The Bighorn Store are excited to kick off a new fishing program on Petenwell focused on getting more kids & parents out on the water together.

First off, congratulations to The Homann family! They are the first family selected for our first outing coming up on Father’s Day! Going forward, we’ll randomly select one family each month for a chance to win a FREE guided trip on Lake Petenwell with Kam & Sam.

As part of each guided trip, participating children will also receive a FREE fishing pole and tackle package courtesy of The Bighorn Store and Castle Rock Bait & Tackle.
