What a week it's been!!! Thanks to Green Valley Elementary School for hosting us this week.

We spoke to 800+ students in grades K through 5, gave individual lessons to every K through 3rd grader, and invited over 250 4th and 5th-graders into the "RecycleDome," our waste-reduction game show to end the week!

Special thanks to Ms. Hanlon and their green school team, as well as all the teachers and support staff, for their hospitality. Go Giants!!!

Congratulations to the class of 2026! All this week, we've been motivated and moved by the next generation. And they might not need our advice, but we're going to give them 3 pieces of advice. 1 is Waste Related.

Advice 1: Don't forget public service. You may not see YouTube influencers out there filling in potholes, except for that cleaning lady with the Hoover. But serving your neighbor is something special. Being able to set into motion programs that benefit people is special, and adding your own worldview and values is too. Think about public service as a career path. Visit Frederick County's Human Resources Page for opportunities and sample job openings to help guide you.

Advice 2: Don't put batteries in your trash or recycling, and don't put your dreams in there either. While batteries could catch things on fire, only your dreams will ignite passion and curiosity inside of you. So put them both in the right place.

Advice 3: Be prepared to lose. Loss, whether it's a game, a relationship, or an idea, is going to happen. The grief that stems from these losses can put you into an emotional well, lack of a better term, a landfill. Find your tribe, your people, your voice, and even in those times of loss, let them support you, because they see your value.

We're so very excited about your future, and you should all be incredibly proud of yourselves. Congratulations, Class of 2026!

A 90-degree June Day?!!! Sounds like the perfect day to send out our Ice Cream Truck we got this winter!! Well...It's not an ice cream truck per se...It's an ice cream-related waste advice truck...Where instead of scoops of ice cream, we scoop out advice...It disappoints a lot of kids.

Through the tears and parents' screams of "YOU CAN'T PRETEND TO HAVE ICE CREAM ONLY TO TELL US WHAT TO DO!" Ice cream is a treat with a lot of waste, and if you're wondering how to dispose of it all, here's a quick guide:

-Half-gallon containers should go into the trash.
-Single-serve cups and spoons should go into the trash.
-Plastic cone holders should go into the trash.
-Ice cream treats and popsicle wrappers should go into the trash.
-Empty sprinkle bottles and jars, as long as they are bigger than the palm of your hand, should go into the recycling bin.
-Empty whipped cream cans go into your blue bin.
-Ice cream should go into your belly.

Time to enjoy the summer fun! Now to find out how to turn off this music.

There's nothing like winning an argument about recycling...

Here's how we can help you win any argument:

Download Recycle Coach.
Say "I need some air."
Look up the item in Recycle Coach and get the answer.
Look at this picture of John Travolta.
Scroll a few videos to waste time while drama builds.
Re-enter the argument and say "SEE!?!?!"

It's that easy! And as always, we're here to help! You can thank us with a smug smile. And if you need some further help, never hesitate to shoot us a message!

Hey Dexter...You can't put your Saran Wrap in your blue bin.

It kills us to see bins like this. Otherwise, really great recycling but a few very big mistakes, like any season after season 4 of Dexter.

And while the inside of the bin might be perfect, when our collectors see a top filled with
-Plastic film
-Tissue Paper
-Plastic Bags

The clues point to contamination being higher than our allotted 10%. Which is why this bin was tagged and not collected.

Remember, plastic film and plastic bags can be taken to most supermarkets around the county for proper recycling!

We're not touching the absurdly large chandelier that is within arms reach...No we are not.

It's hard to follow directions sometimes but when your actions "Allegedly" cause 2 tons of crystal to fall to the ground.

And while your one choice might not bring down or destabilize our county's recycling program, many touches do.

Changing one bad habit can help us out in big ways. Download Recycle Coach, visit our website, and ask questions. Your choices matter.

On an unrelated note, does anyone know a good lawyer?

Your blue bin's love language is acts of service. Love it by checking it for contamination and mopping the kitchen.

We can't believe the school year is almost done. We're finishing up our school year strong with visits to Deer Crossing and Green Valley this week!

One question we get a lot is "Can you put people in your recycle bin?" and usually this is followed by various questions about gross stuff that can't go into your blue bin.

While yuck is a big problem in blue bins, there's a deeper conversation we like to make in these cases: YOU are not recyclable.

Yes, YOU as a person have a value that is beyond any item. So if you've been feeling low, especially when everyone around you is excited and growing, but you feel like you're stuck.

You may feel like trash, but YOU are so much more.

Remember, there are community resources, including dialing 988, the Mental Health Association of Frederick County walk-in mental health clinic at 340 Montevue Lane, Frederick, MD, and, if you're having a mental health emergency, dialing 911.

We might be in June, but today is just as important as yesterday.

Sorry, Oliver...We will not take your food waste for composting YET...

On Friday, we made the big announcement about purchasing the land to the southeast of our facility, which will allow us to expand our composting to a tier 2 facility and allow us to take food waste for composting.

However, this is a few years off. We DO NOT have any food waste drop-offs. If you would like to prepare yourself, start setting aside food waste and then put it into your trash, or find a 3rd-party composting company that offers services.

It's exciting news, but it's also long-term news, so as the kids say, "Let us cook."

Frederick County's motto of "Rich History, Bright Future" was celebrated today, as County Executive Jessica Fitzwater announced the purchase and next steps of the Nicolas Hartman Farmstead.

Founded in the late 1850s, the Nicolas Hartman Farmstead property has moved on from its agricultural roots over the past 20 years. Now, these 138 acres will be given new life and, in the coming years, become the centerpiece of plans to begin offering organic food waste composting in Frederick County. This purchase will also give our facility room to be on the cutting edge of solid waste management.

While it'll take some time, we look forward to honoring the Hartman family by being good stewards of this land to serve a bright future for all of those who live and work in Frederick County!
