In the past five decades Star of the West Milling Company has continued to grow. Expanding from a single mill to five flour mills today in four different states and nine country elevators handling corn, soybeans, processing edible beans and providing local farmers with their crop inputs and sound agronomic advice.

Wheat Wednesday: Stripe rust has now been confirmed in Michigan wheat fields in Tuscola, Lapeer, and St. Clair counties.

Dr. Marty Chilvers of Michigan State University is encouraging growers to scout fields closely and consider fungicide applications where appropriate, especially as current head scab risk remains moderate to high across parts of the state.

The group kicked off the summer at our corporate office with onboarding, safety training, and an opportunity to hear from CEO Jim Howe before heading out to locations across our footprint.

A few weeks ago, our Star of the West Milling, Rapson location hosted a great Bring Your Own Wheat Day sponsored by Syngenta.

Growers had the opportunity to bring in wheat samples, ask questions, and connect with wheat experts from to help diagnose field concerns and prepare for the growing season ahead.

This week, we’re proud to highlight Dylan Bailey from the Montague FFA Chapter as the winner of Michigan FFA Star in Agricultural Placement.

Star of the West was proud to sponsor this award, and our own Katie Adam had the opportunity to serve as a judge for the interview portion of the contest.

Dylan represents the next generation of agriculture, bringing dedication, work ethic, and a passion for the industry. Through his involvement in FFA and agricultural placement experiences, he’s building a strong foundation for a future in ag.

Throwback Thursday: The Rosebush Elevator was purchased from the Brown family and these two photos highlight the growth of the location over the years. Notice in the 2000 photos two large bins on the right, and the later photo we now see two larger bins haven been added to the right, and two extra large bins at the top of the photo,, for a total of six. The location is adjacent the rail, for easy shipping of grains. Leave a comment if you remember what year the new bins were added.

Wheat Wednesday: A summer classic is back, registration is now open for the Michigan Wheat Program’s Summer Field Day.

Load up the wagons and join fellow wheat producers for a show-and-tell tour through the MSU research plots, featuring the latest in wheat research and production practices.

There is no cost to attend, but advance registration is requested for breakfast, lunch, and wagon space.
