Dutch Letters are available to order! They are $25 for a box of five ~8” “S” shapes. I recommend cutting them into 1” bites to serve. They freeze very well, I once opened a sealed freezer container six months after baking and they were perfect. Because they take so much time to prepare, these will be Saturday pickup only, beginning December 16.

What are they, though? Handmade puff pastry wrapped around an almond paste and brown sugar filling, sprinkled with sugar. They are a Dutch delicacy, introduced to me by my husband’s aunt. Aunt Nancy lives in Iowa and could not keep up with my sweet tooth, so I learned to bake them myself. They are a favorite holiday treat in our family, and I’m so excited to share them with you.

It’s a butter candle! A candle made of butter! I was insta-influenced and I have no regrets. It was so fun at Thanksgiving, I have already added it to the order page. The candle is half a pound of salted butter, with Rosemary sprigs throughout, and a fully functional organic cotton wick. The sourdough boule will be pre-cut for easy serving, just pop the butter candle in and enjoy. I recommend lighting the wick 30-45 minutes before dipping!

Thanks to your enthusiasm for tiny pumpkin rolls, I am making a donation in the Cult’s honor. We are collectively supporting Sarah’s Circle in Chicago, a non-religious organization aimed at ending homelessness for women. I can’t find the source right now, but a few years ago it was only $750 to bring a woman off the street and into her own home/apartment. After speaking with some of the women while serving meals, I can say that even if you have never been close to homeless- many of us have been just a hair away without ever knowing it. Do good, eat cake!

I really like it when orders include a boule. They’re fun to make, and I think they are the superior sourdough format. I just bought some small banneton baskets with a thought to making bread bowls. A million years ago, I was young and had somewhat less than no money. Some of my favorite things came from trawling thrift stores and pop-up markets in the garage alleys of Evanston. These perfect mini bread/refrigerator containers came from that time, a dollar or two or maybe five with the lid included. When I started Crust Cult, I thought it would be nice to have more of them for mini breakfast cakes. To my absolute shock, they are now coveted and valuable. I think the lesson is that if for a time you feel garage-sale-old, stick it out. Eventually you’ll be a coveted and valuable antique.

I helped myself to an extra week of vacation. Let’s be honest, August isn’t high season for comfort foods. My political platform will always be “Abolish August,” nobody would even run against me. Type something mean-spirited about August in the referral notes for 20% off… expires at the close of August, naturally.
