Originating in the 16th century, the German scold's bridle was a brutal device designed to suppress and control those who dared to voice their opinions, particularly targeting women accused of offenses such as gossiping or airing grievances. Known as 'branks' in Britain, this cruel apparatus featured a distinctive nose piece, a jagged mouthpiece, an adjustable neck ring, and a ringing bell, all meant to humiliate and dominate the wearer. Although it primarily affected women, historical records indicate that men also endured this severe form of punishment and societal repression. The prevalent use of the scold's bridle in Northern Europe highlights the deeply entrenched patriarchal ideologies of the time, which aimed to silence dissenting or unconventional voices, especially those of women.
