I believe our name is one of the most personal pieces of our identity. It carries our history, our culture, and a part of who we are.
When I moved to the United States from Mexico, people struggled to pronounce Eduardo. For most of my life, I let people call me Eddie because it was easier for them. I made myself easier to pronounce, easier to understand, easier to fit in.
Then I opened my bakery, and I decided I was done doing that.
I reclaimed my name.
So it honestly makes me laugh when someone thinks calling me “Eduardo” or using my name against me is somehow going to offend me or put me in my place.
You cannot weaponize something I am proud of.
I am a proud Mexican American man. I am a proud gay man. I am proud of my culture, proud of where I come from, and damn proud of the name my family gave me.
For years, I answered to a name that was easier for other people.
Not anymore.
And for anyone who still struggles with it, Eduardo is pronounced the way it’s spelled in Spanish. It’s not difficult. You simply have to make the effort.
My name is Eduardo.
Learn to pronounce it. Learn to respect it. And understand that I will never again make myself smaller to make someone else comfortable.
