What a devestating blow to our community 🤯

Day 1

When you are told you will be a mother to twins or multiples, a magnitude of things go through your mind. Having already successfully breastfed my two sons prior, I was sure that I would have no issues with caring for two infants at once. After 30 weeks gestation, Cash and Bleu made their grand entrance. Due to them only being 3 and 2 lbs I was not able to nurse them right after delivery as planned. I was so defeated because I wanted their first meal to be from mom (thank heaven for gracious donors). I began a very strict diet and pumping routine. I hated the thought of having to maintain pump parts, tubes, and milk labeling. I was so stressed out. "Will they ever latch after their tubes are removed?” “How will I bond with my babies if I cannot directly nurse them?” It was in those times of doubt I had to remember that our words have immense power. Through the encouragement of my village and team of NICU nurses, I found my confidence to continue pumping and doing skin to skin. At only two weeks, I decided the time to latch had come. I was advised that it would be too stressful for my babies to latch feed but just as any mother would, I was an ally and advocate for my babies. I decided to unhook all of their machines and feed them. Baby A, Mr. Cash was a champ right out of the gate. After rooting he suckled for only 7 minutes but I saw a light in his eyes that I will never forget. Baby B, Eden had a tough time as he was just 2.5 lbs at the time but he persevered. After the first day i would nurse them twice a day even with the feeding tubes in their noses. I began tandem nursing at day 23 in the NICU. We were eventually released when each baby reached 5lbs. I continued nursing for 16 months before self weaning. Do not ever stop advocating for your kids. As a parent we know when they are ready for the world or when we need to hold their hands just a little longer.
