What you do in the first 72 hours after a storm can make or break your insurance claim and your roof.
Here's the process we walk our clients through:
1. Safety first. Stay off the roof. Watch for downed power lines, sagging ceilings, and water-soaked drywall. If it's unsafe, don't go in.
2. Document everything. Take photos and video of all visible damage, inside and out, before you touch anything. Include timestamps if you can.
3. Stop further damage. Tarp the roof or hire a pro to do it. Insurers expect "reasonable temporary repairs," and they're typically reimbursable. Keep your receipts.
4. Call your insurance company. File the claim early. Claim windows fill up fast after a major storm.
5. Get a professional inspection. A licensed roofer can spot hidden damage like lifted shingles, compromised decking, and flashing failures that aren't visible from the ground.
6. Vet your contractor. Storm chasers show up fast and disappear faster. Check license, insurance, local references, and written estimates. Never sign over your claim or pay in full upfront.
7. Review the scope with your adjuster. Make sure your contractor's estimate matches what the insurer approves. Supplements are common and legitimate.
8. Repair or replace. We'll tell you honestly which one your roof actually needs, and then do it right with proper permits, code-compliant materials, and a workmanship warranty.
9. Final walkthrough. Inspect the finished work, get your warranty paperwork, and keep all documentation for your records.
A roof is your home's first line of defense. After a hurricane, the right steps in the right order protect your property, your claim, and your peace of mind.
