Sunday we went down to First Stop Donuts. Which happened to be our first stop on our vacation! First Stop Donuts is an apple cider donut truck that frequents the Forest Hill Park Famers Market. Just off the James River, near Belle Isle.

This isn’t a formal review. As they don’t serve a standard glaze:

Their apple cider are the best we’ve had! Flavor was there. It had a warm, semi-crisps exterior. Nice tears when ripping apart with your teeth or hands. This is the ”STOP” for apple cider donut enthusiasts!

Today we stopped by the volunteer fire department farmers market, in Toano, Virginia.

No Nuts Donuts Provides a vegan, gluten-free and nut free alternative to the donut.

 Generally we review a places original glazed option, and then a “what are you known for”.

We got their orange donut, with blackberry glaze. The donut was a cake style. It had a really good flavor. The glaze was a jam style, with blackberry chunks. It was nice, light, with a lot of flavor.

So while we can’t give no nuts donuts a review score based on our criteria, we do want to give it a recommendation. We are excited that those in our community with dietary restrictions, allergies are able to enjoy one of our favorite desserts.

Time for another donut review! While on our honeymoon, we stopped by Hole donuts. A local joint just outside of downtown Asheville.

Type of Donut: It was deep fried and fresh. Kind of like getting a hot now Krispy Kreme donut. But you could definitely taste more oil. Courtney commented that she didn't like how the donut was kind of flat. Almost flat pressed.

Glazed donut test: The glaze was very tasty. And had generous portions. It wasn't glaze all the way throughout, but rather just on the top half.

Specialty donut: They had a beignet donut. Ryan commented that it kind of reminded him of funnel cake. Courtney said it was fluffier. The outer coating was very delicious, it had a really good taste.

We give these donuts an 8.5 out of 10.
- This lands it in the great category. Just below Paul's bakery in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Just above country style in Richmond, Virginia.
- What inched it above country style was the fact that these donuts are served hot.

The Dent's, the two, Now have a review for you.

We are on the way to our honeymoon spot. And found a donut shop on the way.

The glazed donut was very fluffy. But the glaze flavor was lacking.

The crumble was dry according to Courtney. And also lacked flavor.

The donuts themselves were fluffy, and had a nice flavor to them.

We give Intown Donutz a 7 out of 10

This past weekend we stopped by (Glazed Doughnuts). A quick, easy stop on the way to visit Ryan’s mom for lunch and an afternoon walk on the Nolan Trail . Glazed Doughnuts is located near the city’s waterfront, and is part of a revitalization project that has been taking place in recent years.

The Glazed Donut Test: The bread itself was good. It was sweet, fluffy, and soft. Very easy to eat. The glaze was lacking, and barely noticeable.

Type of Donut: Dunkin Donuts traditional style. 

What Are You Known For #1: We had an old fashioned doughnut. The server encouraged us to grab their pumpkin spiced, glazed. It was pretty good. The bread didn’t have the best texture, but we wanted to note we got these doughnuts later in the day, and the bakery had been open since 7:00 that morning. The flavor was fine. It lacked a strong or substantial coating, as did the original glaze we had.

Overall: 7.5 out of 10

Final Thoughts: This doughnut shop is on par with Freddy’s, out of Fredericksburg. We thought Freddy’s had a better overall old fashioned, with taking into account us trying Glazed later in the day. Freddy’s glaze coating was better, but Glazed Doughnuts’ bread was sweeter, softer, fluffier. 

Mya's Review: probably at 7.5 out of 10 as well. As she didn't finish the treat right away.

This past weekend we grabbed donuts from Paul’s Bakery, before spending our 1 year dating anniversary at a hockey game (Go CAPS!). Paul’s serves up pastries, donuts, cakes, cupcakes, and all sorts of dessert style baked goods. 

The Glazed Donut Test: Glaze was very similar in coating to a Krispy Kreme donut. That nostalgic moment where you touch into the glaze, forming small cracks that break off on the tips of your fingers. An ode to the KFC mantra, “finger lickin good”. The bread was fluffy, not very dense, but more dense than a Krispe Kreme. 

Type of Donut: Fried yeast. Same glaze style and fried style as Krispy Kreme. 

What Are You Known For #1: We had the raspberry filled donut. It was the same savory bread and sugary glaze as the traditional glazed donut. At had a generous raspberry filling. But not too generous as to overpower the donut itself. The raspberry had a good flavor to it. It was not unique or worth writing more about. It was a filling that served it’s purpose. 

Overall: 8.6 out of 10 

Final Thoughts: This is the highest score to date that we’ve given to a donut shop that doesn’t have fresh, made-to-order donuts. Hot, out of the fryer donuts have been given our highest reviews so far. So it’s a big deal for Paul’s to be given a score higher than 8.4. 8.5 or higher earns Paul’s Bakery the distinguished title of “Road Trip Worthy”. 

 A Krispy Kreme donut is essentially a poor mans Paul’s Bakery donut. Something two Krispe Kreme lovers would never thought they’d say.
