As the flowers take their winter rest, the ovens will soon be busy with holiday baking! While the flower farm winds down for the season, we’re getting ready for one of our favorite times of the year at the bakery.

It may not be Halloween quite yet, but it’s never too early to start planning your Thanksgiving and Christmas desserts!

Some of our favorite holiday flavor combinations include:

- Pumpkin or spice cake with maple or cream cheese frosting
- Gingerbread cake with vanilla frosting
- Chocolate cake with peppermint frosting

We also love creating custom cakes and cupcakes for your special celebrations! Whether you’re planning a family gathering, hosting a holiday party, or looking for a festive dessert to share, we’d love to help make it a little sweeter.

Ready to place an order request? Visit our Bakesy page to get started. We encourage you to reach out early to reserve your spot for the holiday season!

This may be our last bouquet of the season!

With freezing temperatures forecast for tonight, we expect our garden to be finished for the year. It has been our best season yet, and we are so grateful for all the beautiful blooms we’ve been able to share with you. Thank you for your continued support!

As we say goodbye to the flowers and settle into the slower pace of winter, we’re already looking forward to what next season will bring. Be sure to follow along for details in the coming months on how you can sign up for a summer flower subscription for 2027!

Things have been a little quieter around here this week because our family took a quick trip to the Black Hills this past weekend to enjoy some time outdoors before winter arrives!

Can you believe it was the first time anyone in our family besides Dad, who grew up in Egan, had visited the western side of our state? We’ve lived in South Dakota for more than half our lives, yet until this past weekend, the furthest west we had traveled was Mitchell!

We had a wonderful time exploring a part of our own state that was new to us. Sometimes it’s fun to be reminded of all the places there are to discover right here at home.

Have you explored much of South Dakota, or are there places in our state you still haven’t visited?

A rainbow.
A yellow path.
Fields of flowers.
And a very special destination.

Put the clues together… what movie do you think this cake is from?

We’ll reveal the answer later!

While most farmers are busy harvesting, we’re still doing a little planting and watching new growth in our garden beds!

Once a flower bed is finished for the season, we cut down the spent flowers and plant cover crops—specifically red clover and rye.

Why cover crops?

They protect the soil over the winter, helping prevent erosion from rain and wind.

They can add nutrients back into the soil to help prepare it for next year’s flowers.

They keep living roots in the soil, which helps improve soil health and prevent compaction.

So even when the flowers are finished blooming, there’s still plenty happening beneath the surface! We love caring for our soil and working with nature to prepare our beds for another season of flowers.

When it’s nearing the end of flower season and you still have flowers growing, you let your little sister in on the fun!

A bucket full of flowers + a little creativity = her very own bouquet.

Maybe we have another little flower farmer in the making!

There’s something pretty special about watching the next generation discover the joy of growing and creating with flowers.

We’re going to let you in on a little cake-decorating secret. 🤫

Sometimes we use a little technology to help us out!

Most of the time, we’re able to decorate our cakes completely freehand. But every once in a while, someone requests something pretty specific—like a person doing tae kwon do—and we need a little help getting all those details just right.

That’s when we pull out a trick we learned from cookie decorators. You know those beautiful roll-out cookies that are cut into fun shapes and somehow have perfectly frosted designs? Many cookie decorators use this trick too!

We find the design we want to recreate and use a small projector to project the image directly onto the cake. Then we basically trace the projected image with frosting!

It’s such a simple trick, but it lets us create designs that would be pretty difficult to draw accurately freehand.

So the next time you see a detailed picture on one of our cakes, there just might have been a little technology helping us behind the scenes. 😊🎂

And if you’re wondering how this particular cake turned out… stay tuned until tomorrow to see the finished cake! 👀
