To My Nana in Heaven,

Yesterday I finally attempted to make the dessert that my best friend’s grandmother always talks about—the one you used to make with your own hands and love.

I know it isn’t the same. It could never truly be the same, because this time it was made by my hands instead of yours. A recipe can tell you the ingredients and the steps, but it can never capture the little things that made something special when it was made by someone you loved. It can’t capture years of love, memories, or the feeling that came with every bite.

I wish you were here so I could make it for you and hear what you thought. But as I stood there making it, I felt connected to you in a way that’s hard to explain. Maybe that’s the closest I can get to having you here with me.

I hope wherever you are, you’re looking down with a smile. And more than anything, I hope I made you proud.
