Jerry Smith is a waterman, history buff, YouTube creator, and life-long resident of Smith Island in the Chesapeake Bay. If he looks familiar, you probably saw him in Peter Santenello's viral video about the island in 2024, which has been viewed 5.2 MILLION times and resulted in a GoFundMe raising more than $38,000 to repair Jerry's hurricane-damaged house. In 2008, Smith Island Cake was proclaimed the official dessert of the State of Maryland. While the exact date that this cake originated is uncertain, what is known is that it has been a Smith Island tradition for decades. The baking of these cakes became a tradition within the island community and these cakes have been sought after by people across the world.

Somerset County Tourism has created a fun way to indulge in this iconic dessert: the Smith Island Cake Trail! The trail highlights 11 places where Smith Island Cakes can be found. Registering, and visiting these locations can get you entered to win a free Smith Island Cake!
