Hey STEAM Labbers! I know it has been a while since our last post (almost six months 😬) but just know we are still here. Once we see how the schools handle cases and how many there are, we will start to plan more sessions. We apologize for the radio silence but as scientists we felt like it was irresponsible to hold classes during a global pandemic. Once we do return we have a couple fun opportunities to learn about virus transmission and how masks can help! Stay tuned and stay safe!!!!

Chromatography Night refunds have been issued and working through Robotics Night refunds now. It is a very manual process so if you don't have an email just yet, it will be on its way shortly. Again we apologize and thank you for supporting us! As an FYI I am currently designing an experiment that we can video and upload here. It would serve multiple purposes: show how viruses spread and why "sheltering in place" and "social distancing" are important, reemphasize acid and base reactions, and give kids an experiment to do from home or at a minimum try to figure out who patient zero is from our demonstration. We will hopefully have that uploaded in the next few days so hang tight!!!

We knew our updated schedule was pretty optimistic and now with the Governor's orders to stay in our houses, we will regrettably officially cancel the four week series. We will reschedule the classes once the all clear has been given. In the next couple days, you should see refunds via Eventbrite.

We apologize but know you all will understand. And just know what we miss having the classes! If anyone is interested in doing something remotely, we can try to brainstorm a way to do a live chat and experiment. Just let us know what you and your kiddos would be interested in while we all spend a lot of quality time at home. Stay safe and hope to see you all soon!

Happy St. Patrick's Day! Tonight we wanted to do a themed STEAM night since tonight should have been our Chemical Reaction Night. We went hunting for "gold" left by a leprechaun! This is something that you could easily set up tonight with a baking sheet, pennies and baking soda with some vinegar and food coloring ready for tomorrow to find the "gold" left by the leprechaun!

We had lots of discussions about:

What we were doing: an acid and base reaction or simply a reaction
What we saw: colors, mixing, reaction, dissolving, bubbles, and "gold"
What we heard: bubbles, fizzing
Why: when the acid (vinegar) was added to the baking soda (base) they react and release carbon dioxide which is a gas.

Here are a few photos of our experiment tonight and the setup if you want to try. Despite not being able to meet and the craziness of learning from home, hopefully everyone can add a little STEAM fun into their lives. If you like this, let us know and we can add more ideas. Also if you do this at home, send us a pic!

Reminder that all events are held in the basement of Innovation Pointe in the MAKE It Evansville space. Please see each individual event page for more details or feel free to reach out. Thanks again for going with the flow as we all navigate this.

As you may have noticed, we have moved our events scheduled for the next two weeks. We haven't cancelled anything yet, and hopefully it won't come to that. We have just moved the first two events to take place after the April 7th class. Please see the individual event pages if you have any questions. And please note that if you had previously registered for the class, you are still registered. We understand that some may not be able to make the new dates, and if that is the case we will offer a refund. Please let us know if you have any questions and thank you for understanding!

Just purchased supplies to make mini volcanoes for our Chemical Reaction Night on Tuesday March 17. Hopefully we will see everyone there! We've missed our STEAM Labbers!

Wow! We hit the 800 like mark over the weekend! Thank you again for your support. Tomorrow, February 25, marks the last night of our first Tuesday Night Series. Never fear - we just created four more Tuesday Night events starting March 17 through April 7. Please pay close attention to the Robotics and Coding nights as we have broken them out by age group. K-3 will be from 5-6pm and 4-8th grade will be from 6:30-7:30pm those nights. Thank you again and we hope you all have enjoyed the Tuesday Nights so far!

We have about 5 spots left for Robotics Night February 25. We will have various robots there so kids can get an introduction to many types: Sphero Sprk+, Sphero Rvr, Lego Mindstorm and VexIQ.

Here is our Mindstorm in action:

Preparing for Math Night tomorrow. Just as fun for adults and kids alike! We will talk about patterns and how they have a mathematical foundation, see what happens when we sew every 6th hole in dark purple then create masterpieces to take home!
