Happy St. Patrick's Day! Tonight we wanted to do a themed STEAM night since tonight should have been our Chemical Reaction Night. We went hunting for "gold" left by a leprechaun! This is something that you could easily set up tonight with a baking sheet, pennies and baking soda with some vinegar and food coloring ready for tomorrow to find the "gold" left by the leprechaun!
We had lots of discussions about:
What we were doing: an acid and base reaction or simply a reaction
What we saw: colors, mixing, reaction, dissolving, bubbles, and "gold"
What we heard: bubbles, fizzing
Why: when the acid (vinegar) was added to the baking soda (base) they react and release carbon dioxide which is a gas.
Here are a few photos of our experiment tonight and the setup if you want to try. Despite not being able to meet and the craziness of learning from home, hopefully everyone can add a little STEAM fun into their lives. If you like this, let us know and we can add more ideas. Also if you do this at home, send us a pic!
