This photograph captures only a few seconds of a much longer story. A hunter carrying the bamboo that will help take him closer to the cliffside hives, while another follows behind, with the work still ahead of them. There is no honey in their hands yet. Only the weight of what they have carried, the mountain beneath their feet, and the knowledge that the hardest part of the harvest begins long before the first drop is brought down. Every step takes them closer to the cliffs, but also carries years of knowledge about where to go, when to harvest and how to return with what the mountain gives them.

The cliff rises far beyond the hive hard, fractured, and ruthless. Yet within its narrow ledges, thousands of bees have made a home.

For the honey hunters, this is not simply a climb toward honey. It is a landscape they must read the rock, the bees, the wind, and every place a body can hold.

The hive belongs to the cliff. The hunters enter knowing they are only visitors.

What remains is honey, but behind it lies an encounter between bees, people, and a mountain that gives nothing easily.

There is a moment before every mad honey harvest when the forest is still far away. The community gathers around bamboo, stripping fibres, preparing ropes, shaping the tools that will soon disappear into the cliffs. These are ordinary hands doing familiar work, yet they are preparing for something extraordinary. Days later, those same ropes will hang hundreds of feet above the forest floor, carrying a hunter towards the hives of Apis laboriosa. What we see as a single harvest is really a chain of hands, places, memory and inherited knowledge. Long before the honey reaches the jar, the mountain has already asked something of everyone who makes the journey possible.

Year after year he returns to the same mountains, to the same impossible walls of stone, and sometimes to the very same hive. All these years, the cliffs have not become kinder. The bees have not become less protective.

Yet there is something different in the way he looks at them now. Perhaps his eyes carry the memory of all the times he has stood here before. The climbs, the waiting, the long silence beneath the cliff, the hive somewhere above him. He knows what lies beyond the edge of the forest, even before he can see it.

The forests change with the seasons. The flowers come and disappear. The years pass by. But somewhere above the forest floor, that old cliff remains. The same stone. The same wild bees. The same place he has returned to, year after year.

From a distance, these harvests appear almost identical, as though each season simply repeats the last. Yet the mountain...

From a distance, these harvests appear almost identical, as though each season simply repeats the last. Yet the mountain has no interest in repetition. Rain redraws the rock. Moss spreads where bare stone once showed through. Old rope marks disappear without a trace, while the bees choose entirely new places to build. Every return begins with letting go of what was familiar. The hunters don’t come back expecting to find the same mountain. They come back prepared to meet it again, knowing it has been changing in their absence all along.

We never imagined our Mad Honey would end up as a bottle of mead, but here we are…..

It was such a pleasure being part of this little experience and watching bring the whole process to life. From the honey harvested in the cliffs of Nepal to the final brew, it was incredible to see the time, patience and craft that went into making something so different.

We are so glad our honey could be part of this journey, and we are already curious to see what you come up with next. Here’s to more good ideas. Unexpected experiments and great brews ahead. Cheers

The real story begins long before a honey hunter reaches the cliff. It begins with the giant Himalayan bees, who chose these cliffs long before we ever named them. It grows with the mountain that shelters them through changing seasons, and with the bamboo forests that offer their fibres woven by human hands into the rope that carries courage into the sky. It lives within a community that understands every harvest is a promise: to leave enough behind for the bees, the forest, and the generations still to come.

The honey hunter is never the beginning.

He is simply the next keeper of a story that nature has been telling all along.
