This is a little late but thank you so much to all of our Eliot neighbors who participated in the Mail Carriers Food Drive. We were blessed with more groceries than we ever had! Your support and donations has made the difference for many of your community neighbors during this time. Thank you to volunteers who gave their morning to help out as well. This pic is only a portion of what we received - couldn't get it all in one pic! THANK YOU!

Here is an important handy-Dandy guide regarding portion size and nutrition!

Portion Guideline (no calorie counting needed):

Protein = palm size
Carbs = fist size
Fats = thumb size
Veggies = as much as you want

Smart carbs:
Rice, potatoes, oats, quinoa
Fruit (especially berries, apples)
πŸ‘‰ Keep portions moderate (about a fist-sized serving)

Veggies (volume + less bloating)
Spinach, broccoli, cucumbers, zucchini, peppers
Big salads are great

Protein (every meal):
Helps preserve muscle while losing fat:
Eggs
Chicken or turkey
Fish (salmon, tuna)
Greek yogurt
Tofu or beans
πŸ‘‰ Aim for ~20–30g protein per meal
One large hard-boiled egg contains about 6–7 grams of protein.
Egg white: ~3.5–4 g
Yolk: ~2.5–3 g
So if you eat:
2 eggs β†’ ~12–14 g protein
3 eggs β†’ ~18–21 g protein
A palm-sized piece of chicken breast (about 3–4 oz cooked, roughly the size of your palm without fingers) has around 25–30 grams of protein.

Quick breakdown:
3 oz cooked β†’ ~25 g protein
4 oz cooked β†’ ~30 g protein
That’s why chicken breast is such a go-toβ€”it basically covers an entire meal’s protein target in one portion.

WE NEED YOU...TO HELP US, HELP OTHERS!

NEIGHBORS FOOD PANTRY IS IN NEED OF CANNED BEANS OF ANY KIND!

Canned Beans are ...

High Fiber & Protein: A half-cup serving provides roughly 7-8 grams of protein.

Heart Healthy: Beans are rich in soluble fiber, which helps lower LDL (bad) cholesterol.

Prebiotic Benefits: They support a healthy gut microbiome.

Convenience: They are pre-cooked and last longer than dried, making them an accessible option.

All contributions can be dropped off at our convenient food bins outside our pantry or Eliot Baptist Church main entrance. They can also be dropped off during our normal Thursday hours.

We are opened Thursdays, 9:30am-12 noon and 5:30pm-6:30pm

Looking for a high protein breakfast to start your day?
Two great options ...

Greek Yogurt Bowl: Combine 1 cup Greek yogurt with nuts, seeds (hemp/chia), and berries.
H**p seeds, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, and almonds provide quick boosts and are great toppings!

Strawberry Protein Shake: Blend whey/soy protein, strawberries, and milk for ~34g protein.
Not a whey/soy type of a person? No worries....add almond milk or Greek Yogurt to boost protein amounts.

March is National Nutrition Month!

A good place to start when learning about nutrition is MyPlate. This simple tool illustrates the five food groups that are the building blocks of healthy eating using a familiar image – a plate. When you look at MyPlate, you’ll notice that half of the plate is comprised of fruits and veggies. Why is that? Because they contain essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber to help our bodies grow, repair, and fight diseases.

Neighbors Food Pantry can help add these important fruits and veggies!

We are open tomorrow, Thursday March 19 from 9:30am-12 noon and 5:30-6:30pm.
We are located at 912 Dow Highway, Eliot Maine.

Do you know the difference between Red and Pink Grapefruit?

Red grapefruit originates from Texas and is milder and slightly sweeter than pink grapefruit. It gets its color from lycopene, the same antioxidant that gives tomatoes their color. Pink grapefruit, a cross between white and red varieties, comes from Florida and is slightly more tart than red grapefruit. Though they grow in warmer states, grapefruit reach their peak sweetness in winter where temperatures are just cool enough to help them mature.

This interesting fact is brought to you by Neighbors Food Pantry.

We are open Thursdays, 9:30am-12 noon and 5:30-6:30pm.
