circa. 1863 -A Swarm of Bees Alights on the Muzzle of a 12 Pound Napoleon in General Tuttle's Camp.

Throughout History, For at Least Two Thousand Years. If Swarm of Bees Alights on the Flag, Guns, or Anywhere in the Army Camp, Soldiers Would be Greatly Comforted, Because it Was Always Considered a Good Omen.

In 1863, General Tuttle's division was encamped at Duckport. The day before leaving Duckport on the Vicksburg campaign, a swarm of bees came over from somewhere in Louisiana and looked the division all over, and finally seemed determined to surrender to Capt. Joe Reeds, famous Second Iowa Battery which capitulation was received by the then Captain and now candidate for Supreme Judge. The bees hovered for a long time around the muzzle of one the twelve pound Napoleons and for a while it was thought they would go into the gun, but finally they settled and hung near the muzzle of the piece and the captain ordered them hived into a nail keg, and had them placed in as good a position as could be found, and they were left there busily at work when the troops left the next day. By many of the boys it was considered as a good omen, and such it certainly was if an omen at all, for Tuttle's division had hard fighting and lots of it during the next two or three weeks and were victorious every time.

Image: ca. 1973 'The Bee Watcher'

Adapted posthumously from the illustration for the 1973 book, Did I Ever Tell You How Lucky You Are?

Did I Ever Tell You How Lucky You Are? describes people in situations that are surely worse than your own. Just imagine if your job was to watch the bee watcher-watcher, who watched the bee-watcher who watched the bee. The Bee Watcher was the publisher’s choice for one of the first fine art prints ever produced for the Art of Dr. Seuss collection.
