BUSINESS SHOWCASE!!
Pan dulce-the spanish translation for mexican sweet bread has been a staple food item of the mexican and mexican american culture for generations. It began in México and soon made its northward move into what is now the United States. Panaderías or mexican bakeries have established themselves and continued to flourish in all areas where there are concentrations of mexican or mexican american populations. Their continued existence and popularity is fueled by the diversity of the mexican pastries offered to these population groups that is then passed on from generation to generation. Its longevity in the marketplace has been unparalleled by any other business outlets.
Elsa has one such business that has, not only, withstood the test of time but has held its place in the community for 50 years. La Mexicana Bakery has met that threshold and is celebrating its Gold anniversary. This marks it as the longest standing local family-owned business in Elsa. La Mexicana Bakery was founded by José Correa Dávila and his wife Aurora in 1969 at a small location on North Broadway St; but their business soon outgrew that location and moved two blocks south to their present location, also on Broadway St.
Jose was born in Monte Morelos Nuevo León México in 1930 and began working at a family panadería by the age of six and a variety of other jobs through his early teens. It was at the age of 17 that he moved to the present day Delta area and began working as a field laborer and at the Elsa Canning Company. Tiring of the seasonal nature and the uncertainties of agricultural labor, he decided to pursue work in what he knew best- baking mexican pan dulce. After several stints at working for other local bakeries, he and his wife decided to pursue their own business venture… thus came La Mexicana Bakery. Their reputation in meeting Jose’s most important aspects in business- la limpieza (the cleanliness), el producto (the product offered), y la atención (the manner in which you treat your customers) proved to be the key to their business success and longevity.
But José and aurora did not go at this alone. They had plenty of hard working and attentive help from their nine daughters and two sons. With José passing away in 2013, Aurora, the matriarch of the family and four of the daughters, Martha, Pearl, Frances, and Marisol have continued to produce the finest pan dulce, corn and flour tortillas and exquisite mexican pastries to be found anywhere in the region. And Why? As Marisol aptly states “at first we worked because we had to…and now we work because we want to”. The secret to business success and longevity well said.
