TLDR: Why it pays to do your research, be confidant in your product, and educate as many people as possible, while doing what you love.

Last night, in the middle of my second vendor event of the day, I was chatting with a new customer. He was asking about my business and looking at all my products. He asked if I ever made Jalapeño Cheese Sourdough. In true Angry Crumb fashion, I saw the teaching opportunity for what it was, and gave my tried and true response:

“That IS a popular flavor, but as a cottage baker I am restricted by Kansas state laws and regulations. That combo is potentially hazardous because the moisture content in the cheese, and the spice level in the peppers needs to be tested and approved by the state before I’m approved to sell it. I’m working on how to get that testing done so I can offer it to my customers.”

His response: A big smile, a handshake, and the words, “Good answer!” He then proceeded to give me his business card, show me his state badge, and we kept talking. I learned about his job and he learned about my business. We shared some laughs and I made a new friend. I now have his contact info, and you bet I’m gonna use that to make testing happen soon.

He was at the event to make sure things were above board, and most importantly to prevent possible illness and any issues that could arise. I saw him stopping at other vendors who had homemade food items, and hopefully no one got in trouble.

As a Kansas Cottage baker, my kitchen does not require being inspected by the state, like in a commercial kitchen. We are restricted in what we can offer. All the products must be shelf-stable, so we have to abide by more rules than you think.

I run my business with the idea that if I’m gonna do something I’m gonna make sure to do things as correctly as possible. Doing your research pays off. Knowing your product and being confidant in what you have is worth it. The laws and regulations are there for a reason. Use these things to your advantage and things will work out.

Most importantly, I made a new friend…quite possibly a VERY valuable one. 😎

Good morning Angry Crumb Fans!!

Here’s what is left:

6 Full loaves of Honey Wheat Seeded
Sourdough Bread. $10 each.

9 Half loaves of Honey Wheat Seeded Sourdough Bread. $4 each.

4 Halves of the Pumpkin Carmel loaves. $5 each.

3 Mini Sourdough Punkins. $5 each.

4 3-pk Snickerdoodles $4/pk.

3 3-pk Oatmeal Raisin $4/pk.

All can be frozen.

The Honey Wheat Seeded bread would be a perfect base for Thanksgiving stuffing or dressing, and I can tell you how to easily make that happen. 😎

Well that’s a wrap!!

What a day!
Started today at 5am to get up and over to the farmer’s market.
Took Mr. Crumb into work and came home mid-day to replenish my baked goods, and finish a few more punkins.
Back out to a vendor market this evening to hang with some peeps at the Creep It Local event.
All in all a VERY busy but productive and successful day.
I’m completely spent and Mr. Crumb looks a little bit green, but we survived.
Met SO many wonderful people today, and saw a bunch of longtime friends too.
Thank you SO much to all the people who bought my baked goods today, and even those who just stopped to sample and say hello.
Y’all make my Angry Little Sourdough Heart Smile!!

I have a few items left, I’ll put them up for adoption in the morning.
Gonna go scan the backs of my eyelids now… 😴

Pretty great morning at the Leavenworth Farmers Market. People were slow to arrive, due to the brisk temps this morning, but it picked up later on. Almost sold out but a few loaves and cookies left over.

I will be back out here at Haymarket Square tonight from 5-9pm for the Creep It Local vendor event! I’ll replenish my stock and bring a few new things too.
Come check out this super fun and family friendly event.

Tomorrow Night, Saturday Oct. 17th, from 5-9pm, I will be at the Creep It Local vendor event at Haymarket Square in Leavenworth.

This is a great event with tons of local vendors. Here’s some of the things to look forward to. Get your kids and their costumes and come on out! It’s gonna be SO fun!!

Dare I say you could knock out some Christmas shopping? lol
