Bake with Deb Baked with love. Human and pup treats. Debbie's Pupcakes and People Treats is an aspiring business that is more like a hobby or, truly, more like an avocation.

I've been baking since I got my first easy-bake oven at age (maybe) 6 or 7. Being concerned about what my adopted fur baby eats - I really don't like dog foods and treats that contain ingredients I can't pronounce - I started home-making his treats by creating my own chicken jerky after a bad experience with a commercial brand. My pupcakes and biscuits are usually not a recipe but a combination o

f a-little-of-this and a-little-of-that. I don't make fancy human-appealing treats, I make food for dogs (proven by my lack of success at craft show sales!). They don't care about frosting and pretty colors and will happily dive - nose and paws first - into a boring beige pile of freshly poached chicken. My people treats are tried and true recipes (no messin' around) that come from my family (most notably my dear departed mom), trusted book and web sources and my favorite TV cooking shows.

Chicken and sweet potato [dog]biscuits. Ignore the clutter!

My original inspiration for homemade dog biscuits dates back to the time when, due to tummy troubles, my dog had to be on a bland diet. The bland diet consists of poached white meat chicken and cooked white rice. I found that to entice him to eat it I had to mash it up in the food processor.

I also felt badly that I couldn't give him any treats during the bland diet phase. I looked at the processed chicken and rice and thought "maybe I can make biscuits out of this". I tried that and it worked! Since then he's recovered and I've been concocting various biscuit recipe combinations.

I mix the batter or dough by eye - looking for a certain consistency to use my silicone molds to bake the treats.

This batch: poached chicken breast, cooked white rice, cooked sweet potato, olive oil, dry milk powder, chickpea and brown rice flours.

Bland diet biscuits - recipe

Ingredients

Poached chicken breast (no skin, no bones, no fat)
Cooked white rice (plain, no basmati or arborio or flavored stuff)
Cooked barley (again, plain)
Brown rice and chick pea flours
olive oil
water or de-fatted chicken stock

Instructions

In a food processor, process the chicken, rice and barley until it makes a fine meal (let everything dry out, that way it won't get gummy).
Put chicken mix in a bowl, add a bit of the oil.
Add flour until its the consistency you want - I scoop it into the mold, much like drop cookie dough. If you want to roll the dough to make cut-outs keep adding flour until the dough gets stiffer.

Bake at 300 for 20 minutes, rotating the pan halfway though
Take them out of the oven and cool the biscuits and the oven
Turn the oven back on to 200, dry for about 6 hours until crunchy (that makes them "shelf stable").

Bland diet biscuits

Many of us pet parents are all too familiar with the “bland diet”.

For those that aren’t: the bland diet is a combination of plain, poached chicken breast meat and cooked (in water) white rice - no spices, no salt, nothing added. It’s usually suggested by the veterinarian when dogs have digestive problems.

Even though chicken is a good source of protein, the chicken and rice diet is not a nutritious diet. My little guy has been on the bland diet several times in the last year and some and is now happy and healthy eating prescription dog food.

The challenge, now, for me is that he loves his treats. I don’t really like the list of ingredients in the prescription dog food so I really didn’t like it when I saw some of the same ingredients in the prescription treats.

Inspired by the bland diet and knowing what food he can eat I created the bland diet biscuit recipe.

My newest [people food] obsession

Bacon with brown sugar

Lay the bacon on a lined sheet pan (parchment or foil) - you may need two pans for a pound of bacon.

Sprinkle light brown baking sugar over the strips, smooth it on with the back of a spoon.

Bake at 350 for 20 minutes.
