ANNOUNCEMENT: Viola Jane Foods is coming back! There will be lots of changes, for instance I will not be doing business as Mill Eats...simply because I am not in the mill. I am also planning to specialize in just two or three products, probably brownies and cookies (remember South of the Border cookies??). I think there is also a good chance I will be selling exclusively through the Internet. Much more info to come as decisions are made. Timing is a huge unknown as I am building out a brand new commercial kitchen. I am so excited I can hardly stand it 😁.

One last note: for those who don't know, Gretchen is 100% healthy and working for Portsmouth Hospital. Thank you for your positive thoughts.

UPDATE: The official countdown to surgery has started. Next Friday will be my surgery and chemotherapy will start approximately four weeks after. We want to thank everyone for the prayers and good thoughts that we have been showered with.

Goodbye from Mill Eats!!!

Where to start? Over the last three years Gretchen and I have made great progress with Mill Eats. Saturday we sold a record 62 bagels. Things are promising.

Last week we were informed that Gretchen, my wife and business partner, has cancer. Although we have no reason to be pessimistic, we are preparing for battle.

The simple fact is that we work 12 hours per day, 6 and 7 days per week, and though we are having a lot of fun, we only break even. I cannot justify spending that much time away from home, especially when all of our money goes back into the business.

Monday, August 10th, will be our last day of business. We sure are going to miss all of our very loyal customers. I will likely return to cabinet building, and Gretchen will continue to run her business from home. We love you guys, and can be reached at [email protected].

Funny... twice this week I've been told that "Naked Cakes" are all the rage right now. When described, they sound an awful lot like the contemporary cakes I have been making for more than two years! Greetings! Been absent from FB for awhile, just very busy trying to grow our little bakery. I wanted to show you a sneak peek from some photos that Ron St. Jean Photography and I are working on that will be used for brochures, menus, web site, etc. We are very excited to make a little progress in the area of promotional materials, as it is a very time consuming process.

Today's special? Cornish Pasties (p**n. "pass-tees"). These little beauties go way, way back in my family history. I don't make them often, but when I do, it fills all five floors of this historic mill building with an aroma that can't be beat! Heaven!
