People are often surprised when they find out how much we fit onto our little piece of property.

We have just under an acre, but we try to make use of every corner of it. Between our gardens, close to 100 chickens and chicks, three bunnies (with seven babies right now!), four goats, our livestock guardian dog, and several beehives, there's always something happening around here.

We even have more beehives down the road on family property, which helps us continue growing without needing a huge amount of land ourselves.

The truth is, we just really enjoy finding ways to do more with what we have. We love the idea of homesteading and being as self-sufficient as possible, but we're also realistic. We aren't out here trying to spend a fortune or have the picture-perfect homestead. We like finding affordable ways to make things work, learning as we go, and sometimes figuring things out the hard way.

That mindset carries over into our bakery, too. We believe you can build something really special without taking shortcuts or spending tons of money. Slow growth might not be the fastest path, but it's the one that feels right for our family.

Some days are messy, some projects don't go as planned, and there's always another chore waiting to be done—but we wouldn't trade this life for anything.

Meet Jezebel. ❤️🍞

For the last 3 years, this BIG jar of sourdough starter has been the heart behind countless loaves of bread & dozens of cookies coming out of my kitchen.

If you know your Bible, you might recognize her name. I named my starter Jezebel because, much like her biblical namesake, she’s strong-willed, demanding, and always seems determined to do things her own way! 😆 She requires attention, throws a fit if she’s neglected, and has a way of taking over when given the opportunity.

But despite her attitude, she’s been faithfully helping me create delicious sourdough bread for three years and counting. From her humble beginnings, she’s grown into a thriving starter that has been shared, baked with, and loved by many.

Every sourdough baker knows that starters develop their own personalities over time, and Jezebel certainly has hers. She may be a little dramatic, but she never fails to rise to the occasion.

Do any of my fellow sourdough bakers have names for their starters? I’d love to hear them in the comments! 👇🍞
