Why You Won’t Find My Sourdough Starter or Porch Pickups This Summer
everyone! I love baking for this community, but lately, I’ve been getting two questions a lot: "Can I buy some of your starter?" and "Can you just leave my order on the porch?"
I wanted to share why I say no to both, because it all comes down to the quality of the bread you put on your table.
First, let’s talk about my sourdough starter. A starter isn't just a recipe; it is a living, breathing ecosystem that takes months—sometimes years—of daily care, specific temperatures, and precise feeding schedules to mature. Selling it feels a bit like selling a pet that requires a manual to keep alive! I want you to experience the joy of a perfect, finished loaf baked with love, rather than the stress of keeping a complex culture alive on your own.
Second, let's talk about porch pickups. With these intense summer months here, leaving fresh, preservative-free baked goods outside is a recipe for disaster. The heat and humidity instantly accelerate spoiling, ruin the crust, and can cause the product to sweat inside the packaging.
I refuse to compromise on the quality of your bread.
So, when you come to collect your order, please come right up to the front door! Knock or ring the bell. I love taking a quick moment to look my customers in the eye, say thank you, and let you meet the baker behind your loaf.
Thank you all for supporting local, handmade bread and understanding the care that goes into every batch! Bake to order with pick up Tuesday through Saturday. Open Thursday and Friday 11:30-4pm with full menu +sweet treats. www.surfbreadco.com or (850) 650-2334.
