Sometimes in life, you just need to pivot.

So, some have heard, many have not, but we’ve been investigating our youngest’s shellfish allergy, curious to see how careful we need to be other than just avoiding eating it.
Okay, so what does that have to do with our baking? You may ask. Well, while investigating this allergy his bloodwork showed wheat, dairy, and egg allergies. He’s never shown symptoms for those like with shrimp, but has more frequently complained of having a sore tummy.

In light of this we’re beginning to experiment with baking things he can actually eat and allow his tummy to heal. Turning our waffles, pancakes, and more things he loves into wheat, dairy, and egg free versions. As of right now I only have one mill, so his things may contain traces of wheat, but I’m continuing to try to mill my own grains and ferment them into sourdough products.
We’re still working through all of this, but I think it’ll just expand our horizons once we get a better grasp. We’ll still be making our normal things if you’re in need of some sourdough goodness, but we might be able to have more things available for more people dealing with similar issues.
It’s important to know how to pivot.

So, we won’t be at the Brightside Farmers Market this week, but we do have some things to share.
We bought some more apple trees yesterday which will mean we’ll hopefully have plenty to share once they start producing!
We will also be thinning out our black raspberry patch, so if anyone is hoping to have some at their own place, let me know! Raspberry plants will be $3 if you dig $5 if we dig per plant. They should produce next year.

Had our first farmers market today thanks to Brightside Aleworks. It was a fun experience and we definitely hope to do it again next month! We basically sold out of the focaccia immediately and I think everyone was loving the boys tell about how they picked the black raspberries themselves. It was a win for everyone 🙌🙌

They make for a great sourdough cobbler too! 🤤

The downside of a good rain. ☹️
Basically a first and last call for cherries. With the cherries absorbing so much mound they’re splitting and the bugs will find them in no time.
If you want some 🍒 come get some!

We have some cherries that are getting pretty close, I’m guessing we’ll have some next week and more the week after. If you’re interested in picking or having the boys and I pick for you, just let us know! It looks like we will only have Bing cherries this year, no Rainer ☹️

We have rhubarb currently available, especially after all the recent rain and strawberries hopefully soon! The sweet bing cherries are looking good but seem less abundant this year and unfortunately our Rainer cherries are basically non existent this year. One apple tree looks great and both pear trees seem pretty bare. I won’t be counting the grapes until they’re actually ripe because last year they started out great then we ended up with issues. On the bright side, we should have peached this year!🙌🙌 We never know what each season is going to bring, but we look forward to it all the same.

I feel like there’s a certain kind of beauty in fresh milled flour. You can even see the difference in the two different kinds in my container, a soft white and linkert, it almost looks like granite. I love that there’s a local supplier for us now too out in Bondurant!

Stopped by a newer shop around town and am so glad we heard about it! Excited to have a local source for our wheat berries and to try one I’ve been wanting for a while. Do yourself a favor and check out Loafer’s Mill in Bondurant, they’ve got way more than just wheat berries!
