10/18/2026
Day 290 of this apocalyptic year of 2026. The year everyone seemed to change. For the worse or for the better has yet to be determined. Evil is among us. We've given up on our system standing for truth. The only truth lives within us. Although I've been called the evil one a time or two, I know my God and I know where I'm going. If you don't agree, take a look in the mirror, but let them talk back to you before you pass judgement.
Anyhoo, all is well at the RockinMoose. We're getting ready for winter. Everything says it's going to be a doozie so we're gearing up for the worst and hoping for the best.
We've gathered the crops and canned what we could with more canning to come. We've made a couple bottles of w**e for the long winter. 54 to be exact but who's counting. Next weekend it's the start of moonshine season. We need at least five gallons to manage the winter. For medicinal purposes of course.
Speaking of medicinal, not only will I explain the knot on my head but the funniest thing happened when I was clearing shooting lanes the other day. Deer season started today and I was trimming limbs off the edges. I slashed a small limb with the extra sharp machete because I can't have a dull one. I went to slash again and the one I just cut was still sticking up. Well it kind of decided to drive into my finger and slide under the skin from behind my fingernail to the first joint. If I was a girl you'd have thought I was getting attacked but I'm not. Well at that moment you'd think a girl was in the woods.
Anyway I got back on the horse and ride back home and went inside and Diane looked at it and the first thing she said was "dang, I bet you screamed like a girl". Anyway, she cleaned it with last year's moonshine and wrapped it with some gauze we acquired from a storage unit we got that was full of medical suppies. The worst part is this morning was the first day of deer season.
So as the story goes, we hunt out of our outdoor kitchen with a little window I can slide up when we see deer and boom. I hop on the horse and go get it. Easy peasy.
The morning went by with no deer coming. I heard the neighbor shoot one and a little later heard a small caliber. Figured he had to track it and finished it with a pistol. The other neighbor isn't a hunter and decided to fire up his log splitter early and split wood.
So since I was surrounded by the very low chance of seeing anything, I decided to bottle all the w**e we had on the rack. I am literally on bottle number 54 and look out to see a big doe.
I grabbed ole George. A 1903 Springfield 30.06 given to me by an old friend of my daddy's. He said it's killed 37 moose, 53 bear, over 120 deer and other things he can't talk about. All he wanted was for it to keep feeding people for as long as it will shoot. Now it shoots low and left no matter how you sight it in but I made a promise that it would kill the first deer of the year.
It also has no magazine so it's a single shot for the most part and I took aim. Then I realized I don't have a trigger finger. It's all wrapped up in old dusty gauze and I can't bend it so I use my middle finger. As luck would have it, I pulled the trigger and she dropped right where she was. She didn't even kick.
Diane comes out and asked if I shot one and I told her yep, with ole George. She asked how since she knew my finger was wrapped up. I held up my substitute trigger finger and said something to the effect of this is thanks to you but not in a mean way, but she didn't take it like that. I never saw the stainless ladle in her hand until it left her hand and in slow motion it flipped end over end and landed right between my eyes.
I woke up to Diane throwing water on me telling me to hop on the horse and go get that deer.
Anyway, we had a good weekend. We have meat hanging and w**e bottled. These 49 bottles of w**e will come in handy for pain killers this winter. Apparently I'm going to need it.
Buckle up, hold on and tackle life one day at a time. Because without God, common sense and a sense of humor, we don't have a chance.
