We received a magnificent display of nature's power last night, as the skies unleashed a rare nocturnal thunderstorm with hail. Despite the loss of some leaves on our ash and maple trees, the majority remain, for which I am grateful. Our roses, fruit trees, flowers, and veggie garden emerged unscathed (as far as I can tell). What a relief! As I drifted back to sleep during the storm, I repeated a mantra...a divine request...to please stop hailing. It must have done so while I was dreaming. Chef Katherine

Rush hour traffic in Yellowstone National Park can be a beast!

Drive cautiously. The park has hazards on the road that you probably aren’t used to, like 2,000-pound bison. Follow speed limits and stay in your car if you’re stuck in a wildlife jam. When you want to take a photo or look around, use pullouts to avoid blocking traffic and damaging vegetation.

It's a very tenuous time to own and operate a restaurant. Another one (of many) is closing. All of our costs continue to climb, and we can only raise prices so much. Of course, we're constantly seeking ways to save money without compromising quality of products or services. Interesting times, indeed. Chef Katherine

Nick Mastronardi, owner of Niwot's 1914 House, announced that the restaurant will be closing at the end of July. In a prepared statement, Mastronardi wrote, "The 1914 House Farewell Tour has begun." He continued, "The economics of the business have reached a point where it is unfortunately unsustain...

Our apologies to the customer who had to wait an extra ten minutes to pick us his scones today. We were doing you a favor to cut those while pre-baked from 6 to 12 and then ice six and powder sugar the other six. Next time, if there is one, the price will be higher.

Our apologies to the customer today who asked us to cut our French pastries in half. We do not do that. We will not do that. We have never done that. When a customer needs smaller portions of our French pastries, we sell petits fours. In fairness to us, this is our way. The customer stormed out.

We do not always sleep well, as owners, trying to find ways to make ends meet.

Denver City Council mandated another higher minimum wage again this year (thanks Paul Kashmann). We have forbidden overtime, we are reducing employee hours (putting more work on the owners), and we may need to reduce staff. Was this the intended consequence of raising the minimum wage? And menu prices have increased, much to the dismay of customers.

The State of Colorado mandated that we must institute a 401k plan with only 10 employees on the payroll. Our plan was set up incorrectly (we each disagree) and as a result our plan was top-heavy for the three months of 2023 that it existed (although the effective date is conveniently January 1 whereupon we must contribute 3% of annual wages to all eligible employees whether they opted in or out). The adjustment (I call it a penalty) will cost us $6,000 to $7,500, depending on what the CPA that I now need to hire will charge me to devine the details. Add the CPA’s cost to the equation, too. (Thanks Paychex.)

One customer comes into the bakery this morning, tosses her purse onto the counter, and knocks over our card holder, a lovely ceramic bird bath in an appropriate size for my counter. Gonzo. If that were me, I would have offered to compensate the owner for the “thing” that I just broke. No such luck.

The showcase broke and cost $3,500 to repair.

The awnings and building signage need replacing. That will cost $6,100.

The top oven overheated, requiring a motor replacement. $3,000 and change.

Yes, it’s odd to see public complaints from business owners.

It is also odd to receive the kind of treatment we are getting these days from customers.

Nothing is ever cheap enough.

Nothing is served fast enough.

Lighten up out there, won’t you?

Most restaurants are sincerely trying their best.

For the customers who have patience with us during these processes, we are very grateful and we thank you.

Chef Katherine

p.s. The dog had surgery recently and has been licking where they probably inserted the IV. I lost 15 minutes this morning tending to his wound, bandaging it, and taping the bandage on with the only thing I could find: packaging tape. Life happens and it isn’t always pretty. We need to show each other more grace.
