Hey there! My name is Catie Cohen, a recent transplant to Denton, part-time apprentice cheesemaker at Latte Da Dairy (where most of my cheeses come from) and a lover of sourdough and whole grains. I left a corporate job for baking a few years ago and since have baked on all of the coasts and always made sure my hands were in sourdough. Demeter’s Kitchen began with a move to the area for my partner’s job, knowing that I wanted to give baking on my own a shot and see if this community would have a taste for my bread. It has since evolved and been inspired by the exciting brew culture that is very present here in Denton.
Demeter is known as the greek goddess of harvest, wheat, bread and agriculture. The story of Demeter and her daughter’s kidnapping to the underworld are how the Greek’s understood harvest and seasons. When Persephone (Demeter’s daughter) was permitted to be with her mother, it was spring, a time for harvest and happiness. When she had to journey back to the underworld to be with Hades, her kidnapper and husband, it was winter, a time of frozen, baron soil and sadness. I adore the Hymn of Demeter for its profound symbolism and meaning to the Greeks. To me, Demeter symbolizes a powerful and intelligent woman who cyclically creates, but also a nurturer who loves so fiercely it changes the seasons.
