Let’s talk Fairy Eggs!
How often do you get them? Why do you get them? What causes a hen to lay them? And does this mean something is wrong?
Here is something that may answer all of your questions!
Nope… it’s not laid by fairies or roosters 😂.
A fairy egg is a tiny, yolkless egg that hens sometimes lay — especially when they’re just starting out.
🥚 Usually much smaller than normal
🥚 Often has no yolk
🥚 Safe to eat (and kind of fun) to crack open
Most of the time, it just means a young hen’s body is adjusting. Nothing scary — just farm life keeping things interesting!
🐓 Do Fairy Eggs Mean Something Is Wrong?
Usually, no.
If your hen lays one occasionally, it’s totally normal—especially if she’s new to laying.
However, abnormal eggs such as (soft shells, shell-less eggs, lash eggs, consistently tiny eggs) could signal:
• Stress
• Nutritional imbalance (like low calcium)
• Illness
If it’s a one-off fairy egg, no need to worry.
🌾 Why Do Hens Lay Them?
Fairy eggs typically happen when:
1. Young hens (pullets) are just starting to lay. Their reproductive systems are still “figuring things out.”
2. A small piece of reproductive tissue triggers the egg-making process without releasing a yolk.
3. Hormonal fluctuations cause a temporary glitch in the laying cycle.
They’re most common in:
• First-time layers
• Breeds that mature early
• Hens adjusting to seasonal light changes
I have found a few recently! Here is a picture of one I found yesterday, the pictures make it look bigger but it was super tiny!
