The maple sap is still flowing good here in the thumb. Collected another 70 gallons today. So how much syrup will be produced from those 70 gallons? A little more then a gallon of that pure delicious Michigan maple syrup that we all love! Did you know that on average it takes 40 gallons of sap to make 1 gallon of syrup. Lots of time spent in the process, but oh so worth it when you get a taste of the liquid gold at the end of the process! Next month is the start of market season and we will have it available to all of you. #roostnrootsmarketfarm #michiganmaplesyrup #sapisflowing #shelbyfarmersmarket #newbaltimorefarmersmarket

We had a home grown roasted chicken for dinner last night. Should of taken a picture of it after it was done cooking. Today we are having chicken tortilla soup, and still have enough leftover for some chicken fried rice to go with dinner tomorrow. This was one of our smaller our smaller broilers. New chicks will be arriving shortly for our spring run. #roostnrootsmarketfarm #farmfreshchicken #leftoverremake #pastureraisedchicken

How do we give our plants a calcium boost without chemicals? We save our egg shells year round and crush them up adding the crushed shells to our plants. This helps with blossom end rot in tomatoes, peppers, and egg plant. While also boosting calcium rich plants like broccoli, Swiss chard, and spinach to name a few. Bonus since our chickens are fed an all natural diet it just makes the plants that much better in my opinion. #roostnrootsmarketfarm #marketgardening

Another round of seed starting happening on the farm today! This year we are also adding more flowers. I have started seeds for my personal hanging baskets for years and have always had plans to add flowers to our market booth and this year I am going big on flowers. We will see as it’s going to be a trial an error year to do this on a larger scale. Hopefully we will be able to offer some nice fresh cut flowers to our booth this year. #roostnrootsmarketfarm #seedstarting #marketgarden #freshcutflowers #vegtablegrowing

My parents always taught us to use up the leftovers. However I like to remake them into another dish. Tonight I was at a loss of what to make so I took some leftover fajitas, pasta, a handful of shredded cheese, a splash of milk and about 3 ounces of cream cheese and made this leftover remix! This made up meal will now be one of my go to meals…so delicious! #roostnrootsmarketfarm #useitup #leftoverremix

Dinner tonight was all grown or made here on the farm. Fried cabbage that has been in the freezer since fall that we grew. Farm fresh eggs laid by our free range hens. Then yummy English Muffin bread that I made a couple months ago that has been in the freezer. Did you know most of our baked goods freeze amazingly well. #roostnrootsmarketfarm

Why do you do it? What makes you get up at zero dark thirty every week, in all kinds of weather, to mark the street, set up your info booth, direct farmers and food makers to their places and answer shoppers' questions? We asked that question at our recent annual conference and got a wonderful variety of answers. Here's mine.

I work to create farmers markets and help them thrive because I learned about the challenges that our small farmers face, from droughts and labor shortages to rising land costs and patented seeds. That made me worry about whether my nine grandchildren would be able to access fresh food as they grew up. Would they know how a just-picked peach or a ripe tomato tastes? Or would they and their children be limited to processed foods and "durable" fruits and vegetables, at best?

That's Calvin in the photo above, excited as always to get celery from his favorite farmer, Andrew from Indian Summer Farms. Cal and his siblings and cousins can easily tell the difference between farmers' market apples and those that come from the cold storage of a big box grocery store. They expect their egg yolks to be deep orange, not pale yellow.

They have that privilege partly because their mom and I have waded through puddles to open farmers' markets in the rain and sweated through them in the heat of summer. During the height of pandemic protocols, we fought, like you, to have markets declared essential services. That let our farmers keep going when restaurant customers and distributors stopped buying and their food was ready for harvest.

Farmers' markets keep small farmers financially stable by letting them keep the retail price of what they grow. Small bakers, sauce blenders, pasta makers and other producers benefit in the same way. Our community members of all ages know what real strawberries taste like. They appreciate being able to connect with their farmers, and each other, every week. And my grandkids love peaches that drip juice down their chins. That's my why. What's yours? ~Catt

Have you ever tore apart your water and ice dispenser on the fridge door? Look at this! Yuck! Make sure to take the time and disassemble and clean. Took five minutes to take apart. Note this was a recently purchased used fridge that looked very clean when we bought it but I took everything apart to clean and so glad I did.

Have you been to the grocery store this week? Sure is sad to see all those shelves empty. The meat, produce, and dairy were bare. Needless to say I will be starting our lettuce early in order to have some fresh greens. So glad we have homegrown chicken, turkey, and rabbit in the freezer. Be on the lookout when market season comes around as we are working on our license to be able to bring you farm raised meats. Also emails will be going out for our next winter delivery tomorrow #roostnrootsmarketfarm #shoplocal #supportsmallfarms #farmfresh #portsanilacfarmersmarket #shelbyfarmersmarket #newbaltimorefarmersmarket #farmfresheggs #freshbakedbreads
