We bought ANOTHER milk cow. This time we will be milking much sooner than we will with Maggie. Maggie is only a yearling so will have to wait a bit to be bred. When we bought Maggie last October I thought it would give me plenty of time to learn (almost two years ) and that I would need every minute of it. Then we had the opportunity to milk a friends cow while they were out of town for awhile and I realized that while there is a lot to learn, I do better hands on learning. Then we started making cheese, yogurt, butter and a lot of chocolate milk with the milk we were getting and I was tired of rationing it out for drinking and other learning opportunities. So we prepared to be ready to say "Yes" when there right cow came along. Last week we saw Violet come up on a market and she was everything I had wanted in a cow. She has calved 3 times and is due April 2nd with her 4th. She was a family milk cow prior to us, the previous family were professing believers (it helps in trusting what they are telling you about a cow), A2A2 confirmed, docile, good with other animals, does well in the cold, and a number of other characteristics that would be a benefit to our family.
Aside from a little houdini escape this morning during church and a little bit of an exciting time on the way home she is transitioning well. She is massive so we have had to teach the kids to respect her size but so far it is going well! We are very thankful!
