When talking about writing make sure to consider the CORE of the body and the importance to writing.
•Motor Skills
In order for children to successfully and joyfully write, they need muscles that are strong and coordinated. Contrary to popular belief: "small" or "fine" motor skills are NOT the only ones involved in writing. Writing begins from the CORE of the body. It depends on a strong core, strong shoulders, strong back muscles, strong biceps, triceps, forearms, wrists, hands and fingers. Not only must a child strengthen those muscles, they must also engage in ways that promotes the coordination of those muscles. Where does this happen organically? IN CHILD-LED play like this.
•Perseverance: writing is hard, a foundation that incudes perseverance helps
•Problem Solving skills
•Visual Tracking
•The ability to manage one's emotions through failures
All of those skills are developed so authentically and beautifully in AMPLE child-led play.
What do I mean by "ample"? AT LEAST five hours of a young child's day should be filled with THEIR PLAY.
