Today we lay to rest our husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle. Dad was a lot of different things to different people, but to everyone he was a friend. And though he will be missed dearly, this is not a sad day. If he could have scripted his passing it would have looked very similar to this. Dad had spent the days preceding his passing at his home with his wife laughing and resting and for the most part pain free. He did not suffer, and he didn’t have to spend his final days in some unfamiliar sterile environment waiting for time to pass as he slowly deteriorated.
He would have been humbled, honored, and probably a little embarrassed by all of the attention that he received in passing, as he did not like to be the center of attention. If he could have been here he probably would have apologized for taking up your time and no doubt brought a smile to everyone’s face with one of his stories, sayings, or possibly by just giving you a hug and a smile.
I am beyond blessed to be able to call him my dad. I was molded by his grit, determination, integrity, love and support, and though at times I probably fall short of his expectations, his influence in my life is a part of my every decision. He shared much of his life lessons through his many sayings. The ones that have had the biggest influence on me include:
“How will you ever know when you get there if you don’t know where you’re headed” The importance of setting goals and making decisions that are consistent with those goals.
“It isn’t worth having if it isn’t worth working for” Work hard and don’t expect to be given anything.
“Life is what you make it” You and you alone control your destiny.
“I’m in pretty good shape for the shape I’m in” Always sprinkle your reality with a little bit of optimism.
And the most important one, love those around you and let them know every day by telling them “I love you”
God rest your soul dad. You will be missed, until we meet again.
