Cakes this week-
1. tombstone cupcake cake- yellow cake with caramel filling and buttercream.
2. Red velvet with cream cheese, black chocolate drip, black buttercream decoration, rose gold lister dust sprinkle.
NOW…. I’m going to be real with you. Both of these orders did not go the way I wanted them to. I spend weeks thinking, planning, and visualizing all the steps I will take to create my cakes. And, I tend to be a perfectionist, so I like everything to go just the way I plan. 90% of the time, that usually happens. 10% happened this week. They’re still cute, but let me tell you “the rest of the story”…
1. It took me two tries to get my caramel filling to cooperate, which never happens.
2. The black icing I mixed for my tombstone cake didn’t cooperate the way I wanted, so I had to reimagine the writing style for the cake AND scrap and redo letters, which also never happens!
3. It took twice as long to get the consistency on my cream cheese icing, even though I’ve never had trouble before.
4. I purchased rose gold luster dust and had planned to spray the pink cake to make it metallic. I’ve done this several times before, and after 2 hours of fighting with the mixture and my airbrush, I had to give up and regroup.
5. My black ganache drip would NOT get to the correct drip consistency, which is why it looks thick and bubbles on the ends- I actually blame the humidity today a little for that one, but I’ve done several dozen drips with all colors and even metallic, and this hasn’t been an issue.
6. The buttercream I mixed for the name was grainy even though I sift all my sugar, again, it may be the humidity.
Moral of this story? Sometimes things don’t go the way you want, even with lots of planning, time, and experience. Even if something has ALWAYS gone right, it might not today. And it’s ok! We change, adapt, and make it the best we can given our circumstances. In the end, all we can do is our best! Well, I’m off to the kitchen- Happy Saturday!
