⚡😳 YOU WON’T BELIEVE WHAT SCHNEIDER’S BAKERY PAID NYSEG IN 1938! TAKE A LOOK AT THIS AND COMMENT WITH YOUR THOUGHTS.
We recently uncovered another fascinating piece of history from Schneider’s Bakery in Cooperstown, and this one really puts the cost of living into perspective!
Pictured is an original check dated November 23, 1938, written by Schneider Brothers Bakery to New York State Electric & Gas Corporation (NYSEG) for just $37.55!
Yes, you read that correctly! This was an actual electric payment made by our bakery nearly 88 years ago!
Of course, $37.55 went much further back then, but can you imagine the difference between operating a bakery in 1938 and keeping one running today? Between the ovens, mixers, refrigeration, lighting, and everything else, electricity is certainly a major expense!
Having been part of Cooperstown since 1887, we’re fortunate to have these little pieces of history that offer a glimpse into everyday life generations ago. ❤️
💬 NOW HERE’S WHERE WE NEED YOUR HELP!
⚡ Take a guess! What do you think Schneider’s Bakery pays for electricity today? We’d love to see your estimates!
⚡ For those who remember the 1950s, 60s, 70s, or 80s, what did your electric bill look like back then?
⚡ What other everyday expenses do you remember costing just a fraction of what they do today?
We especially love hearing firsthand memories from those who remember Cooperstown and the surrounding communities years ago. Your stories are part of our local history, too!
