9/11/2001 was the day that changed the world. So many lives lost, families shattered and a world forever changed. It changed my life in a way I never imagined. I was in first day of training of a new job when someone knocked on the door to the training room. The trainer left and returned quickly to inform us of what had happened and dismissed us so we can contact our loved ones. I remembered my brother was supposed to be working across the road from the towers. I tried calling him but no answer. I kept trying and finally reached him only to discover they were called to an emergency job in White Plains, NY that morning. Thank God he wasn't there that day but, in the days, to come trucking companies from all around the area would be called in to help. He was present for that. A few days later, a friend who owned a celtic shop a few blocks from the towers called me. She had had a mild heart attack the night before, so she wasn't in her shop when it happened. The doctor made her promise that she would see her personal physician first thing in the morning, so she did. By the time she was out of her doctor's office, the city was in lock down and she had learned what happened. She had many firefighter, emergency response, EMT, police officers as friends that had perished. She asked if I could embroider blankets for the families. I said yes, not thinking (I didn't own an embroidery machine). I eventually purchased an embroidery machine as the boxes of blankets started to arrive. That was the start of my business. I didn't know if I could do it, but I knew I had to try and help. I remembered Richard Branson once said, "If someone offers you an amazing opportunity and you're not sure you can do it, say YES, then learn how to do it later." The names of those who died were embroidered on those blankets along with other info such as Fire Dept, EMT, precinct, etc. I have no idea how many I did. My heart was heavy thinking of all that lost loved ones on 9/11. It wasn't much, perhaps was just a little something I could give to let them know they weren't alone. God works in mysterious ways. 24+ years later and here we are. May we never forget that day and all the lives lost and affected by the tragedy. They were brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles and even young children. They were someone's loved ones and their lives matter. Never forget.
