Since we moved here, I’ve seen hundreds of fried pies advertised on Billboards, Farm Markets, Roadside stands. The closest comparison I had was the 2 for $1 dried up fruit pies we used to get at the Hostess outlet back home, so I always passed on them. Then at a market this summer I was set up next to a fried pie vendor from another town and bought one just before they sold out and after 2 bites, I became a believer! My only wish was that I’d been able to try more than one flavor, alas, they were quite large so I limited myself to just the one. A few weeks later, I pulled out granny’s pie crust recipe, simmered up some fruit fillings and got work on My own tiny version. It’s not much like your traditional southern fried pie, although I regularly recommend several local purveyors for those wanting the classic style, mine are the size of a wonton with a denser flakey crust and a heavy layer of salted vanilla pastry glaze and topping that indicate and accentuate the flavors inside. Available in 4 flavor “Pie Popper” samplers with the double size “Big Poppas” available in 10 or more flavors once a month.
