Tea cakes are simple, historic cookies with roots in British afternoon tea traditions from the 1840s. Over time, they became a cherished Southern comfort food, often served during Juneteenth as a symbol of resilience and community.
They’re light, buttery, and comforting with just a hint of nutmeg and vanilla. Nothing fancy, just good, honest baking that feels like home.
This is actually the first recipe I remember ever baking as a kid! I found it in one of those old church cookbooks and was so excited to try it. Did they taste good? Absolutely not! But that’s okay, because it stuck with me. Now I can honestly say my baking has come a long way, and this batch turned out so good!
