I think the kids have learned that the first time Dad says “No” to something means you had better bring your best lawyer skills forward if you want any chance of getting what you want.
I really wish I had recorded that conversation because my youngest son just got us from the point of “no more dogs” to packing our bags and going to the airport to go get his dog.
Welcome to the family Dilligaf.

Our first time getting to see Layla, who is definitely one of my favorite American Quarter Horses in the program.
This is her being prepped for the reining competition in Texas last weekend.
I’m still learning the ins and outs of the different competitions but what I’ve learned so far is this competition is designed to put the horse through maneuvers and skills they would use on your standard cattle ranch in the west.
I never knew each horse has an entry fee which can cost anywhere from $800-$3000 depending on the competition, judges fees of $50-$250, $35 for medication fees per day, $50 security fee per day, $50 stall fee per day, and a $25 per day video charge during competition. So you can see the fees add up quickly.
However this is where you increase the value of your horse as well as its offspring. A successful horse will display that it has a great temperament while being very agile and responsive showing their skills during high speed maneuvers and maintaining their amazing coordination during spins and lead changes. The number of horses in the competition will dictate the prize pool and waiting for all the results can be somewhat nerve wracking at times but this is where we see if all the training paid off and how the program compares to others.

The second stop on our excursion was Akumal where we got to swim with the turtles.

We knew this was going to be the highlight of the trip for our animal loving daughter and the turtles definitely did their part by constantly swimming around her.

I only wish I had brought an underwater camera for this excursion as the pics from the iPhone in a waterproof bag don’t give the experience justice.

We took a sightseeing trip to The Temple of Kukulcan and learned a lot about the people of the area.
While the Mayan civilization may have collapsed and there are many things about their culture we can only guess at, the Mayan people are alive and well and they are a very friendly and welcoming people.
Our tour guide did such a great job keeping us amazed with all of the history and culture I really didn’t take a lot of photos so I’ll have to steal them from later.

We took the kids with us this year to Mexico for Dead Ahead.

While I know this music won’t have the same impact on them as it did for me I’m happy that I got to share such an important part of what made me who I am.

took this photo during the first set and definitely is one of my favorite pics from the trip.

A lot of the older smaller communities in Mexico usually have a church in the center of town with a large courtyard in front for the people of the town to have social gatherings or buy and trade goods.
Most of courtyards we came across had these unique cement benches for couples to sit and talk while on a date and a chaperone bench right next to it. The S shaped bench allowed couples to face each other and hold hands and have cordial conversations without the chaperone having to fear they would get to close.

Our youngest watching the moon rise over the gulf in Mexico.

They say when your child turns 14 that 75% of the time they have growing up in your household is gone and there’s only a short time left before they are on their own.

While we as parents always celebrate all of their firsts like learning to walk, talk, run, go to school, first dates, first dances, or even the first time they drive it’s always the lasts that are the hardest. The last time you can pick them up, the last time they ask to play just one more game, the last time you get to kiss them good night as you tuck them in bed. You never know when the last one will be but I promise you’ll miss it when it no longer happens.

They really do grow up too fast

We woke up this morning to new life on the ranch. Streudel decided to bless the ranch with two baby girls.
Cows don’t usually have twins so this was definitely an unexpected surprise.

The Christmas season was my Mom’s favorite time of the year and if you ever visited our house during the holidays growing up you would’ve sworn you stepped into the North Pole itself.
When was pregnant with our youngest son my Mom got sick with her terminal disease and the Drs didn’t think she would make it to see her 6th and final grandchild born but she was determined to hold him and not miss the special occasion.
For many years I carried the guilt that the stress of the trip from California where my parents lived to Connecticut where he was born sped up her death but after much reflection and discussions with my family we all agreed it was her choice and what she wanted. Her grandchildren were everything to her and nothing made her happier than being called Nana.
While I really do enjoy the holiday season and watching my kids appreciate all the magic that is Christmas, the pain of her departure has never gotten easier and every Christmas tree just reminds me of my Mom.

Thanks for all you did Mom, your love and guidance is missed every day.
