At the Bagel Factory we make authentic Whidbey-style bagels - boiled & baked with ~30 different flavors. PLEASE give 3 days notice. The Goose Community Grocer carries our bagels fresh every morning. If you prefer the convenience of drive through, our bagels are available on the island at Whidbey Coffee and Jet Java.

Happy New Year!

No, I’m not late. Feb. 17 is the Lunar New Year. Many people think of it as Chinese New Year. Which got me thinking and remembering something I read a long time ago about the roll of the bagel in China.

Guang-bing is a Chinese flatbread that resembles a bagel with a central hole. It dates back to around 1563. It was used by General Qi Jiguang to feed Chinese troops. The thing I remembered most about them is that they were worn around the neck for easy, on-the-go consumption during battles.

I have Chinese friends that have included me in many of their new years festivities and feasts, and when a good party lasts for 16 days – like this one – how can you not love to be included and a part of it!?!

The Lunar New Year is a time for family reunions, cleaning (to remove bad luck), and festive decorations. Here at the Bagel Factory we have embraced the new year with some cleaning and renovations as well as a new menu. We were instructed to relocate our beloved bagel former machinery; however, it is still available to view. You’ll need to trek to the back side of the shop through the Ken’s Korner hallway. Now you can see our team using the big mixer to make the dough, the sheeting table, the former, and see the bagels in the proofing racks.

For the new menu we set aside a few things that weren’t selling very well, introduced a few new items and we’ve made a couple changes to some things to make things less confusing and easier to customize.

We hope to see you at the Factory and Happy New Year!
