Happy pie Friday! My hands may be cramping from juicing tiny key limes, but there are some yummy pies around these parts now.

1. Key lime pie with fresh lime zest and browned butter graham cracker crust
($4.50 per slice)

2. Chocolate cream pie—decadent & creamy, for the true chocolate lover
($4 per slice)

3. Aunt Joyce’s pecan pie—the ONLY pecan pie I like! This beloved family recipe is sweetened with raw honey and maple syrup (instead of sickly sweet corn syrup) so you can enjoy a slice of buttery pecan goodness tucked in a homemade crust
($4.50 per slice)

If you order a whole pie, you’ll get a slice for free.

P. S. Only two bake sale Fridays left after this!

Start planting snap peas in Northern Utah this week & throughout March to get an early harvest. 🙌 Peas tolerate the cold and snow remarkably well. I soak my seeds for 4-6 hours, sprout them in a paper towel in a glass container with a lid in a dark cupboard, and then plant the sprouted ones.

Sugar Daddy Snap Peas are one of my go-to garden snacks, but it’s always fun to try new varieties. Happy planting! 🫛

Cool plant of the day: Mini Zucchini 'Astia'

"Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day. Teach a woman to garden, and the whole neighborhood gets zucchini." 😆

BUT if you don't want to be overrun by zucchini, try one of these small plants instead! Astia is a well-bred French bush zucchini variety, developed especially for container growing and planting in small space gardens. These non rambling, compact squash vines are also highly ornamental with big silvery-green, deeply indented leaves.

Early bearing and productive, Astia bears abundant zucchini near the base of the plant where they are easy to harvest. These uniformly smooth, lustrous, glossy-green zucchini have excellent flavor and are delicious whether roasted, sautéed, steamed or baked.

Cool plant of the day: Purple Tomatillo

Purple salsa anyone?

"Having never tried Tomatillos before, I decided to try them this year. The purple looked so pretty and sounded nice; so I went with these....My father in particular really loves eating these fresh; I ended up with one green tomatillo out of the bunch, and he really loves this one. The purple tomatillos get really purple anywhere the sun touches; they are absolutely gorgeous. I just about cannot get enough of looking at them. We finally collected enough to make a roasted tomatillo salsa verde. It is the best salsa I have tasted so far." -Lisa

"Tried one of these plants last year and liked the taste of the few fruits we got, so this year we grew 2. With tomatillos, you really need to grow more than one. One plant you'll get 5-10 fruit, with two plants you'll get 50-100 from each, it feels like. I love these and have been busily converting all of my friends at the community garden to them. As noted elsewhere, the plants sprawl. Standard tomato cages will not contain them. You either need to figure out a more open structure or deal with the fact that you'll be searching through a sprawling mass of plant to find all the fruits. Definitely wait for the husks to split and dry. Exposure to light seems to be key in getting this fruit to ripen and turn purple. If fruits fall off early, you can take them out of their husks and ripen them on the counter in a basket. At least I've had good luck with that. I use these in all sorts of recipes, now or just eat some fresh. Tart but sweet with an unusual flavor." -Bob

Bring on the homemade salsa.
