What takes so long to make a row? Animals. Playing in the dirt. Here's a little bit of our morning... I had enough prepped cardboard for only 3/4 of the row but a little at a time is still progress.
We are adding a few more rows for next season so the cardboard barrier can hopefully kill the grass underneath and decompose beneath all the sweet potato bed's dirt topped/mixed with rabbit manure... no heavy equipment so we do it with a shovel and a bucket. With rain in the forecast in a few days, we want to take advantage of it to secure the new walkway mulch and settle this first layer of dirt. We will be getting some more rabbit manure to spread and mix to add more nutrients and compost that is cool enough for plants, and contains the hair and bedding from the rabbits which will hold moisture in the rows and break down further, slowly releasing all the good stuff.
3 more rows should fit in this space before we get to the asparagus bed but it's a slow process, and a lot of recycle to collect, remove any tape, and lay.
But that's more veggies next season!
Our first rows did not get the cardboard so we are weeding the best we can as we go through the garden. Much of it will die off in winter and we can manage it better in spring when it tries to re-emerge again. These rows will hopefully have less so we can plant more delicate plants that are harder to pull bermuda and crab grass out of without damage.
