Today started out good but flipped to horrible QUICK! My husband has had a sore on his foot for a few months now. He isn't diabetic but he has neuropathy in his feet and can't feel when or if he injures his feet. He and I both keep a close eye on his feet and legs because of this. He got a blister on the side of his right foot about 3 months ago. We believe it was from his shoes being too tight. The next day the blister popped and I began treating it with antibiotic ointment and bandaging it. We order him some new shoes that are 4x extra wide to prevent this from happening.
Meanwhile the sore wasnt healing but getting worse so we made a appt with his dr. She prescribed some oral antibiotics, prescription antibiotic ointment, and gave us this special gauze bandages called Xeroform. They contain antibiotic IN the bandage itself. So the process was clean it, put the antibiotic ointment on it, then the xeroform gauze, and finally some roll bandage that sticks to itself to keep that xeroform in place and kept the bandages clean.
We continued this process and when it wasnt improving we went back to the dr especially because not only was the sore not getting better but because his foot was swelling up like a balloon! She prescribed a different oral antibiotic and gave us a new prescription for the xeroform bandage and for a water pill to be taken twice a day to help with the swelling. We continued with cleaning, treating, and bandaging it looked like it was getting better on the outside but there was one spot that he could feel pain in and the swelling refused to go down. The skin had spots near his pinky toe that was looking simular to a cross between bruising, and with some skin that was peeling. I told him I thought that there was infection deeper in his foot and that he needed to go to wound care as his dr mentioned. But being a hardheaded man he didn't want to listen.
Day before yesterday he began to run a fever and finally that night he had what looked like a seizure. He still refused to go to the er but agreed to his dr. She wanted him to go to wound care but because they want you to come every day and you have to pay $40 a visit as a copay and we didnt have the money he refused. So the dr gave him a MUCH stronger oral antibiotic as well as a injection once a day for 3 days to be done in her office. Today was the 2nd shot. A few hours later he had another seizure and called 911 himself. He had 2 more seizures in the ambulance while on the way to the hospital. His blood pressure was all the way down to 70/40!!! The dress said if we had waited just one more day that he might of not survived.
They admitted him to ICU and put him on IV antibiotics, pain meds since he takes those they got a order from the dr for that too. As well as some meds to raise his blood pressure because of it being so dangerously low. The meds are working because his blood pressure began to raise to a stable level. When I left it was 119/74. Almost normal. They said the fever of 103 combined/due to the sepsis (infection thats made it into your blood stream) was what caused the seizures.
The dr said he feels that they caught it in time. But can't make any promises about his foot. With the infection now in his blood stream and all the way down close to the bone he can't guarantee that they can prevent him from losing his foot. I'm just thankful that he won't lose his life! I pray he dont lose his foot too but even if worse case scenario he did lose his foot, they could fit him with a prosthetic foot. He could still live a normal life with a few adjustments.
In the end, God has it all under control. Keep him in your prayers that his body continues to respond well to the antibiotics so he comes out the other side of this whole and well and soon because he isn't a very good patient. He hates the hospital. He won't get rude with the nurses or anything but is very visibly impatient about staying more than 1 or 2 nights at the most. With all of this in mind I won't be doing the vendor event on Saturday. But once this is behind us I am planning on setting up in town where their is much more traffic and hope that we will be close to the amount of sales or even better than if we could of had if I had done the vendor event. I'm heading to bed to try to get some sleep. Yall have a good night's sleep. Good night yall.
