Opa’s Blueberry Farm

Opa’s Blueberry Farm We are a locally-owned U-Pick blueberry farm located 5 miles south of Chassell, MI on the Klingville Rd.

Due to the periodic dry weather conditions this summer, the berry production was much lower than we expected. Therefore, we are shutting down for the year. If you still need berries, Gierke Blueberry Farm, about 0.5 mile down the road, is still open.

We thank everyone who picked with us this summer and look forward to seeing you in the fields next year..!!

Picking has been steady during the week - mostly in high bushes in the Center field. However, if you plan to pick this weekend, go to Right field across the drainage ditch, as many large berries on these bushes continue to ripen. There still are berries in Center field high bushes, but the amount varies by individual bush and are starting to go soft. Look in the center and lift low hanging branches. The low bushes in the Center field produced well, but are finished for this year.

Other than posible rain tomorrow evening, the weather looks good for the coming week. There are very few mosquitoes, so come out and enjoy relaxed picking in a wooded environment. See you in the fields..!!

Picking has been steady during the week. However, there are still plenty of berries in the high bushes in the center field and on the young bushes in the right field across the drainage ditch. Several mid-season varieties in the right field will be ready for picking this weekend (picture), so a good time to stock the freezer.

We are also offering pre-picked berries (fresh or frozen) for $8.00/lb with a minimum order of 5 pounds. To order, call (906) 281-2206 or email ([email protected]) and we will contact you when your berries are ready for pick-up in Chassell.

We will see you in the fields..!!

Just a quick update. Just back from the farm, there are more berries ripe in the high bushes than I reported earlier. The low bush blueberries continue to ripen in the center and right fields, so picking looks pretty good for the weekend.

See you in the fields..!!

We have decided it is time to open for picking..!! The berries in the early low bush variety in the center field are ripening, but the number of berries is less than in the low bushes planted 5 years ago in the right field (turn right across the drainage ditch). They are finally producing this year and is the “hot” spot now to pick..!!

A few high bushes in the middle field are also starting to have berries. However, many are covered by the large growth of new branches, so one has to “dig” into the bush or look for low hanging branches to find them. The main crop of mid-season blueberries should be ready to pick by the August 8 weekend.

Overall, we are into "recreational" picking, where you enjoy being outdoors surrounded by a forest and bring home an adequate number of blueberries. A bonus this year is the low number of mosquitoes, but bring repellent just in case. Looking forward to seeing you in the fields..!!

It's that time of the year..!!
Now is the time to get your buckets ready for blueberry picking.!! We have had ample rain and now very warm temperatures, so berry production looks like it will be very good this year (picture). Also, the many early variety bushes we planted in the last few years are finally ready to produce -- hopefully by the last week of July. We will give updates as the berries ripen.

Looking forward to seeing you in the fields soon..!!
