It is finally time to close Opa's Blueberry Farm for this season. This was the best year we ever had, and hopefully the red currant, blackberry, and raspberry bushes will be ready next year. Thank you for picking with us, as you have many places where you could go. We look forward to seeing you in the fields next year..!!

This will be the last update before our closing. The rain appears to have stopped, so this weekend will be a good time to pick if you need more berries for jam, pies, or the freezer. The short and tall late variety bushes to the right of the drainage ditch still have many large berries and the cool weather prolongs the time until they go soft (picture). Don't miss it..!!

Hope we will see you in the fields..!!

The late variety blueberry bushes are finally ready to pick..!! They are located in the small field to the right of the drainage ditch. These bushes are easy to pick (only 4 - 5 feet tall) and you can easily fill up containers with large, sweet berries in a short time (picture). The low 5-year old bushes across the drainage ditch are also starting to produce large berries, so don't forget them.

The high bushes in the center field are still producing record numbers of berries and will for the next 2 weeks. However, many berries will go soft after several days in the refrigerator, so use them quickly or put them in the freezer. We will see you in the fields..!!

Weekend Update

Just back from the farm and there are many "blue" berries on bushes in the center fields. However, the number of berries that are overripe is increasing, so the picking will be slower and more "recreational". Therefore, you should use the berries quickly or freeze them as soon as possible.

There are still many berries left to ripen, so we look forward to seeing you in the fields for the next 2 to 3 weeks..!!

Now is a good time for blueberry picking..!!

The late variety blueberry bushes are full, ready to pick, and are in the small field to the right of the drainage ditch. These bushes are easy to pick (only 4 - 5 feet tall), so you can easily fill up containers with large, sweet berries in a short time (picture). The low and tall bushes in the center fields are still producing record numbers of berries, so fill up the freezer.

The response to our pre-picked fresh and frozen blueberries was much greater than expected. Thank you for helping make this endeavor a success. The price is $7/pound with a 5-pound minimum order, and we offer delivery to Houghton, Hancock, and Calumet.

We hope everyone has a pleasant weekend and maybe spend some of it in our fields..!!

It has been a busy time this week with many berries leaving and heading for kitchens and freezers. The later varieties of blueberries are becoming ripe, so no problem finding berries to pick. Now is also the time to have your kids help, as bushes planted 5 years ago have finally started to fruit. They are a perfect height for younger children to pick berries (picture), and are located in the right field across the drainage ditch. Remember to bring insect repellent. See you in the fields..!!

Seven day update..!!

The number of pickers and the weight of blueberries since we opened were the highest since we bought the farm. However, if you haven’t picked yet or you still have room in your freezer for berries to last through our long U.P. winter, now is the time to do it. Both the low and high bushes in the center fields are full of berries, as yesterday several people picked over one pound from a single bush. Also, the low bushes in the right field are loaded with large berries and will be ready for picking in a few days (picture). Remember to bring water when picking on these hot days, don’t forget insect repellent and if needed, we have pre-picked fresh and frozen berries.

Thank you for helping us make our retirement “project” a success..!! Looking forward to seeing you in the fields.

Pre-picked berries..!!

The blueberries are continuing to ripen, so now we are offering fresh and frozen berries for $7.00/lb. A minimum order is 5 pounds, which you can either pick up in Chassell or have delivered in Houghton/Hancock for $5 and in Calumet for $7. To place an order, call (906) 523-4679 or email [email protected] and tell us how many blueberries you would like and how to contact you (telephone or email) when your order is ready.

Since this is the 1st time we have offered pre-picked berries for sale, there may be some unforeseen “glitches” in the process. If so, please be patient and understanding. For those of you that still want to pick your own berries and enjoy fresh air and the sound of mosquitoes in flight, we hope to see you in the fields..!!

1st week update..!!

We just returned from the fields after what was a wonderful week – both for weather and for picking blueberries. It was a record week for us with a median harvest weight of over 5 lbs. However, there are plenty of berries available on both the short and tall bushes in the middle fields, as berries are ripening as fast as they are being picked. Remember to look in the bush interior and on low hanging branches, and don’t forget insect repellent..!!

Due to the heavy, early harvest, we won’t start taking pre-pick orders until later this week. A hearty thank you to everyone that has already picked, and we hope to see all of you in the fields soon..!!
