Cake Drums vs. Cake Cards – Why It Matters

When you order a cake, you may not notice the board underneath it—but that base is actually very important for the stability and safety of the cake.

🥁 Every cake from us is placed on a cake drum.
A cake drum is a thick, sturdy board (about ½ inch thick) made from multiple layers of corrugated cardboard and wrapped in food-safe foil. It provides the strong support cakes need during transport and display.

🍰 What is a Cake Card?
A cake card (or cake board) is the thin cardboard round that many bakeries place cakes on. They are usually only 1/16–1/8 inch thick and are commonly used between tiers inside stacked cakes, not as the main base.

⚠️ Why not use a flimsy cake card as the base?
When a cake sits on a thin card instead of a drum, several problems can happen:

• The board can bend when the cake is lifted
• Cracks can form in the frosting or cake layers
• The cake can slide or shift during transport
• Heavy cakes can collapse or the board can buckle
• It becomes much harder to safely move the cake

Even a single cake can be surprisingly heavy once you add fillings, buttercream, and decorations.
