I’ve typed and typed and typed, trying to figure out how to word this post, but it almost feels wrong to try to capture the importance of Juneteenth in words when my privilege will never truly allow me to understand just how important it is to so many.

All I can say is this: today feels like a good day to learn something, listen to somebody else’s story, and appreciate a freedom that wasn’t equally shared for far too long.

I didn’t plan on coming out of retirement anytime soon, but when it comes to dealing with hatred online, I only know one way.

My entire life I’ve joked that I’m a “bad gay.”
I don’t wear rainbows. I’ve never felt the need to be “proud” of my sexuality. It’s not who I am. It doesn’t define my personality any more than being straight defines yours.

But as I’ve gotten older, I’ve come to appreciate Pride more and more.
Not because I need a parade. Not because I need validation. But because I’ve learned why it matters.

For every hateful comment left on a news article, there’s someone reading it. A teenager, a friend, or a neighbor. Someone scared to be themselves. Someone wondering if they’ll be accepted. Someone seeing firsthand that the moment they step into who they are, there are people lined up to tear them down.

The statistics speak for themselves.

So, in typical Rock City fashion, I’m putting the as****es on a cookie.
