The reality and pros & cons of having an in-home bakery…
There are SO many things I love about having my bakery at home.
I get to be home with my kids, do pickup and drop off, attend class parties. I can work around our family’s schedule. I don’t have to commute. My overhead is lower. And I get to have this little bakery that I’ve built right in my own basement… which is a dream.
But there’s also a side of it that I don’t think people always realize…
I never really leave work…
And honestly, being a stay-at-home mom and homemaker makes that even harder.
I’m already home all day. I’m taking care of the kids stuff, cooking, cleaning, doing laundry, managing the house, keeping up with the garden, animals, meals… ALL the things that come with keeping a household running.
And then there’s the bakery.
The dishes are downstairs.
The mixer is downstairs.
The fridge is downstairs.
The starter is downstairs. 😂
The orders, supplies, inventory, messages, prep lists… all of it is literally RIGHT THERE.
So even when I’m “off,” I’m still home.
And sometimes I feel trapped in the house, if you will.
There isn’t that physical separation of leaving for work, finishing your day, and coming home.
Because I’m already home.
And when I’m overwhelmed with the house, I can see the bakery.
When I’m overwhelmed with the bakery, I can see the house.
😂🥴
It can make it really hard to feel like I’m ever completely off.
I LOVE being a stay-at-home mom. I LOVE being a homemaker. And I LOVE my bakery.
But trying to balance all three can sometimes feel like I’m constantly bouncing from one job to the next without ever really clocking out.
And I’m learning that just because I can go downstairs and do one more thing… doesn’t mean I always should.
Sometimes the bakery needs to stay downstairs.
Sometimes the dishes can wait.
Sometimes the laundry can wait.
Sometimes I just need to sit on the couch with my girls and be MOM… which I feel like I fall short of.
Because as much as I love this business, I don’t want to be so busy working from home and keeping up with the home, that I forget to actually enjoy being home. ❤️
So if you catch me taking baking breaks… or taking a bit longer to respond to messages… just know, I’m trying my best! 🥰
