"I can tell you're busy when you go quiet." A business owner friend made that comment to us recently, and it's 100% true.
Aside from the hectic nature of May, the month brought some challenges that were a bit more internal for the business. The best word to sum up May is: recalibration.
The $10,000 tax levy became a catalyst for change. It revealed cracks in the business all across the board that I was trying to overlook but was then forced to confront.
That recalibration has crossed into my personal life, too, as I've been reflecting on what "time off" and "rest" actually mean. I'm really terrible at both. When I get a break from the bakery, I feel guilty. I watch sales all day to see if I'm needed. When I sleep, I vividly dream about the bakery all night long. I can't stop. And while I love Moo's so much, I don't want to think about it all the time. ;)
We're still cleaning things up over here and onboarding our summer crew. While we originally planned to return to extended hours in June, we're actually making the opposite move and will be closing at 2 PM on Saturdays for the month. The main reasons for this are:
1. We're typically slower from 2-4pm
2. We're very tired come 2pm & struggle to prep adequately for Sunday (and therefore under prep for Sunday)
3. We'd like to also give our crew and ourselves the time to enjoy summer evenings
We ALSO want to put more energy into market season, improve production flow, and ensure we're consistently stocked with higher quantities of our best-selling bakes during prime hours! I've been warned about inconsistency in hours, but we believe this is the right decision for the summertime.
Year 1 was about throwing everything at the wall and seeing what stuck. Year 2 is about systems. I used to get annoyed when my mentor said, "You don't know what you don't know." buuuutttt, turns out he was right & I really didn't (and still don't) know a lot. So, thank you for giving us the space to learn & implement those lessons. I can see some really positive changes happening within the structure of Moo's, and I know we've taken our customers along for quite a few pivots over the last year and a half.
We're excited for a really beautiful month. ✨
