FUN FACT:
The whoopie pie's exact origin is hotly debated, though historians generally credit either the Pennsylvania Dutch (Amish) or early 20th-century New England bakers. Here is the breakdown of its regional roots:Pennsylvania Dutch: Legend suggests Amish and Mennonite women invented the treat using leftover cake batter and frosting to pack in farmers' lunch pails. The name is said to come from the shouts of "Whoopie!" children would make upon discovering them in their lunchboxes.
New England: Maine and Massachusetts also lay claim to the dessert. Historical records show the Berwick Cake Company in Boston was credited with inventing the "Whoopee! Pie" in 1926 to compete with Devil Dogs.
Meanwhile, in Maine, Labadie's Bakery in Lewiston has been serving them since 1925.Today, the confection—composed of two soft, mound-shaped chocolate cakes sandwiching a creamy, fluffy filling—is especially popular throughout the Northeastern United States and is officially recognized as the state treat of Maine
