Hooray!

Meet Izzy, first year apprentice at Three Sisters Community Farm!

Apprentices work alongside experienced farmers to develop their skills and learn the ins-and-outs of what it takes to run an organic vegetable farm - from seeding and transplanting to sales and marketing. This state-registered competency-based program spans two growing seasons and includes on-the-job training, classroom instruction, an hourly wage, and plenty of opportunities to connect with and learn from the broader farmer community.

FUN FACTS:
Fave farm food to grow: I get excited to check on zucchini progress day to day.
Fave farm food to eat: Basil = pesto.
Fave farm tool: There's a lot you can accomplish with a stirrup hoe!

Q&A:
Where did you grow up?
Campbellsport, Wisconsin

What are you most excited to learn as you begin the OVFM Apprenticeship program?
I am looking forward to getting a peak behind the scenes of the whole operation and what informs the decisions that are being made each day on the farm.

What drew you to the OVFM program?
The opportunity to participate in a program that includes a structured guide through work that I care about was exciting to find. Following a few core principles including respect, community, and fun has led me to many amazing opportunities, including my seasonal farm hand role at Three Sisters Community Farm and later the OVFM program!

What do you imagine yourself doing after you graduate from the apprenticeship program?
I imagine myself with a new skill set and relationship with plants and food that I hope to contribute to my community.

These eye-catching mushrooms popped up overnight in the storm on a dead elm tree. Does anyone know if they are Oyster mushrooms...or if not oyster, can anyone give them a confident identification? One cluster weighs between 5-10 pounds and they have some yellow on them.

The first picture was taken in 2012 the year of our first garden at Three Sisters when the glorious Ash trees still provided a lush green background for our work. By 2020 all of the Ash trees, the dominant species in the farm's landscape, had died.

Four years later there is still so much work to be done to remove the dead trees which pose a risk to our buildings and/or safety. Thank you to skilled arborist Adrian Lee from Third Coast Tree Service for felling the trees that might have otherwise fallen on our hi-tunnels.

In addition to saving some of our own seeds, we order seeds from 5 companies: High Mowing Seeds, Meadowlark Hearth Seeds, Johnny's Select Seeds, Osborne Seeds and Mythic Farm. All the seed orders are in. We are trying some new varieties of fall leeks, bunching carrots, bell peppers, watermelons, winter squash, lettuce mix, parsnips and pac choi.

We keep detailed records of each seed ordered in order to comply with organic certification, and we have to save every seed packet as tangible proof for our annual audit.
