Children's Picnic Table: One of the things we love best about furniture restoration is taking a old piece of furniture and breathing new life into it so that future generations may enjoy it. As I sit sanding and painting I often wonder what stories a piece would tell if only it could talk. A hand scratched smily face or someone’s carved initials give a small glimpse into the tales of the past. This particular piece of furniture has such sentimental value to us because it holds the stories of our family, a small children’s picnic table hand crafted over 60 years ago by our great grandfather Lacy Strong. A first name some might note that is shared by this writer’s beautiful wife. A simple oak plank and some pine boards have served as a place where 5 generations of children have come to gather, break bread and celebrate countless holidays with their family and loved ones. A piece filled with smiles, laughs and family cheer. We hoped to pay homage to Great Granddaddy Lacy’s table as we glued back together old cracked oak, and repainted pine with a bright cheerful mint color that seems close to the original paint that unknowingly hide underneath that sunflower yellow. The cross supports under the old bench seats still show the different paint jobs that have happened over the last half of a century. Our hope is that future generations can see the past as they sit and dream about the future for centuries to come. $Priceless. Lacy MacAlister
